Carnell Tate, the first WR selected in the most recent NFL Draft, produced just 7.8 PPR points in his Week 1 debut. The rookie finished as the third-highest scoring WR on his own team after catching four of his 6 targets for 38 yards. But looking under the hood, there is plenty of reason to be encouraged by Tate’s week one performance.

Tate was one of college football's most efficient WRs last season, posting 3.03 yards per route run at Ohio State. He was one of just two WRs in this past draft class to reach at least 3.00 yards per route run in a power conference.
That kind of efficiency will likely be tougher to find as a rookie, both because of Tate's inexperience and because Cam Ward's offense hasn't shown it can deliver efficient production to its pass catchers.
The biggest positive from Tate was an 18.8% target share that tied Wan'Dale Robinson for the team lead. For reference, six first-round rookie WRs have achieved at least an 18% target share over the past three seasons. That includes Zay Flowers, Malik Nabers, Tetairoa McMillan, Emeka Egbuka, Marvin Harrison Jr, and Brian Thomas Jr.
There will likely be plenty of frustrating outputs from Tate over the rest of the season. But with his encouraging opening week target volume, spike weeks will be there as well.
