Jaguars HC Doug Pederson announced Tuesday that QB Trevor Lawrence and RB Travis Etienne will not play in Thursday night's Hall of Fame game, the preseason opener. This is not a surprise. NFL Network's Tom Pelissero reports that 49ers QB Nick Mullens will need surgery on his right elbow after suffering an injury late in Sunday's loss to the Cowboys. Mullens reportedly lost feeling in the arm after having it hit on a 4th-quarter pass. C.J. Beathard will start Saturday's game against the Cardinals.

Update: Cam Inman reports that it's Tommy John (ligament replacement) surgery for Mullens.

The 49ers have designated QB Jimmy Garoppolo to return from IR. That doesn't necessarily mean he'll play again this season; it simply opens the 21-day practice window. With just 2 weeks remaining, that means the team could have Garoppolo practice the rest of the way without needing to decide on activating him. We wouldn't bet on Garoppolo taking the field in Week 16. C.J. Beathard appears in line to face the Cardinals on Saturday.

49ers QB Jimmy Garoppolo was benched at halftime of Sunday's game against Miami. He was horrible in the first 30 minutes, completing just 7 of 17 passes for 77 yards and 2 INTs. QB C.J. Beathard replaced Garoppolo. We're assuming the 'Niners will go back to Garoppolo next week, but we'll see what HC Kyle Shanahan says.

The 49ers announced that QB Nick Mullens will start tonight's game against the Raiders. QB C.J. Beathard (wrist) will be active as the backup. Mullens went undrafted out of Southern Miss. He completed a mediocre 60% of his career passes in college and tossed 46 INTs in 44 games. Downgrade George Kittle to low-end TE1 status with Mullens under center. We'd try to avoid the rest of San Francisco's passing game.

An MRI on 49ers QB Jimmy Garoppolo's left knee revealed a torn ACL. His 2018 campaign is over. If this is a clean ACL tear with no other ligament damage, Garoppolo has a good chance to be ready for the start of the 2019 season a little over 11 months from now. QB C.J. Beathard takes over for the rest of this year. He completed 55.3% of his passes and averaged 6.3 yards per attempt in 5 starts late last season. The 'Niners averaged just 14.8 points in those games. Garoppolo's absence will be felt by everyone in this offense.

Beathard's a streaming option in a game that looks ugly from all sides. The situation might add a little risk that severe struggles lead the rookie to be pulled for Garoppolo mid game. We already saw Shanahan replace Brian Hoyer with Beathard in such a manor. We expect Garoppolo to step in as the starter at some point before this season's over.

The 3rd-round rookie sparked the offense in Washington, completing 19 of 36 passes for 245 yards, 1 TD and 1 INT. He also added a 14-yard run. Beathard can't be trusted in fantasy lineups of any type at this point but could certainly prove to be a long-term upgrade over QB Brian Hoyer. It's also worth noting that Beathard was college teammates with TE George Kittle. The duo hooked up of 3 of 7 attempts for 41 yards on Sunday.
