Drew Brees Fantasy Football News | Shark Bites

Fantasy Football News 2022

Most Recent Shark Bites

Saints QB Drew Brees sat out Saturday's scrimmage with a strained left oblique, according to the New Orleans Times-Picayune.  Obviously, that means it's time to completely avoid Brees in fantasy football drafts.  Either that or this is no big deal at all.  Brees might be the safest pick in all of fantasy, and it'll take a lot more than a missed early-August scrimmage to alter his outlook.  Draft him as you normally would.

The Saints snagged WR Brandin Cooks after trading up to #20.  New Orleans had quietly gotten thin at WR.  Cooks has a good chance to slide right in as the 3rd receiver behind Marques Colston and Kenny Stills.  The Oregon St. product racked up 195 receptions,  2,881 yards and 21 TDs over the past 2 years.  He did most of that damage outside the numbers, despite going just 5'10 and 189 pounds.  This guy has big-time speed and explosion, ranking among the top WRs in the 40-yard dash, 20-yard shuttle and 60-yard shuttle at the Combine.  He'll struggle for consistent targets in 2014 but has tons of long-term fantasy upside.  Colston turns 31 in June.

Saints insider Jeff Duncan believes the team is in the midst of transitioning to a "more balanced, ball-control" offense.  The team has cut ties with RB Darren Sproles and WR Lance Moore in the past week, and RB Pierre Thomas might also be gone before the 2014 season kicks off.  That'd leave the backfield to Mark Ingram and Khiry Robinson, more traditional RBs than pass-catchers Thomas and Sproles.  New Orleans has also become shaky at WR, with 30-year-old Marques Colston and a bunch of unproven youngsters.  More commitment to the ground game this coming season makes sense.  The offense will still revolve around QB Drew Brees, but his attempts figure to head south in 2014.  He's topped 650 passes in 4 straight years.

The forecast for today's Saints-Panthers game calls for winds of 15-17 mph with rain starting at 2 pm local time.  That makes a tough matchup for QB Drew Brees even tougher.  According to Yahoo.com's split stats, Brees has averaged 279 passing yards with 48 total TDs and 24 INTs in 24 career "windy" games.  (It's unclear what qualifies as "windy.")  The weather conditions should benefit the Panthers, who figure to go with a run-heavy attack.

Saints QB Drew Brees conducted his post-game press conference with his right (throwing) hand wrapped in ice.  He didn't talk about the injury except to say that it's nothing serious.  Brees didn't miss any snaps in Sunday's loss to the Rams.  It was a rough day, though.  He threw 2 INTs, lost a fumble and was sacked 4 times.  We'll keep an eye on Brees' status throughout the week.  He has a rematch with the Panthers next Sunday.

What did you do with your Friday? Ravens QB Joe Flacco spent it getting the richest contract in NFL history. Flacco's deal will reportedly exceed Drew Brees' by some slight amount. Of course, it's usually tough to tell how much money a player will actually make based on the initial reports of his contract. QBs tend do play out their lucrative deals, though. So Flacco becomes the highest-paid player in league history. We knew a ridiculous contract was on the way after his stellar playoff performance piloted the franchise to its 2nd Super Bowl title. The money certainly doesn't change the fact that Flacco is a backup-level fantasy football QB.

HC Sean Payton and the Saints have agreed to a 5-year contract extension.  It keeps the offensive mastermind in New Orleans through the 2017 season.  There were rumors that Payton would consider packing his bags for Dallas, but a return to the Big Easy was always the most likely scenario.  Payton has won 62 regular season games, plus a Super Bowl, in 6 seasons with the Saints.  The team has finished as a top 6 offense each year.  Payton's new deal is excellent news for the fantasy values of guys like Drew Brees, Darren Sproles, Marques Colston, and Jimmy Graham.

Saints RB Darren Sproles underwent surgery to repair a fractured hand.  The team hasn't provided a timetable for his return, but Sproles obviously won't play against the Eagles on Monday night.  And he'll likely miss at least another couple weeks beyond that.  It's a significant loss for QB Drew Brees, but he remains a must-start in fantasy.  The big winner here is Pierre Thomas, who could see 15+ touches per week with Sproles out.  Marques Colston, Lance Moore, and Jimmy Graham also figure to pick up a few extra targets per game.

A useful nugget from WWLTV New Orleans' Bradley Handwerger: In the 10 games OC Pete Carmichael called the plays after HC Sean Payton injured his leg last season, the Saints averaged 476 yards per game.  They went over 500 yards 4 times and topped 40 points in 6 of those contests.  In comparison, they averaged 452 yards in 6 games with Payton calling the shots.  The Saints' average points per game climbed from 29.5 to 37.  This isn't a knock on Payton, who's one of the most brilliant offensive minds in the game.  But it is a reason to believe that this offense won't miss a beat with Payton suspended for the year.  It's a well-oiled machine, and QB Drew Brees is an on-field coach.  We didn't lower the Saints' players in our Preseason Rankings because of Payton's suspension.

The Saints and QB Drew Brees have agreed to a 5-year, $100 million contract.  It makes Brees the highest-paid player in NFL history on an annual basis.  The two sides had been in a stand-off all offseason, but this deal was always a lock to get done.  Brees has been absolutely prolific since joining the Saints back in 2006.  He's tossed for at least 4,300 yards and 26 TDs in all 6 seasons, finishing as a top-3 fantasy QB each year.  This new contract takes him through his age 37 season and stabilizes his dynasty league value.  Brees will retire a Saint.

ESPN's Chris Mortensen reports that Saints QB Drew Brees is willing to hold out of training camp if he doesn't get a long-term contract.  The team has supposedly offered Brees a deal that would make him the highest-paid player in NFL history.  Brees is looking for another million on top of that.  The two sides still have 6 days until the July 16th deadline for franchise players to sign long-term contracts.  Expect plenty more hardball between now and then, but we're still expecting a deal to get done.  As long as Brees is present for the start of camp, this whole contract squabble won't impact his 2012 fantasy outlook.

Saints QB Drew Brees has yet to sign his exclusive-rights franchise tender as he looks for a new long-term deal.  But he sounds confident that an agreement will be reached before the July 16th deadline for franchise players to sign long-term contracts.  "I’m still very confident we’ll get a long-term deal done, and hopefully that’ll happen sooner than later," Brees said.  He also confirmed that negotiations are "ongoing."  We haven't reported much on this story because we don't expect it to impact Brees' 2012 fantasy stock.  The Saints can only play hardball with their franchise player for so long.  We're fully expecting a deal to be in place that will have Brees on the field for the first day of training camp.

Saints QB Drew Brees is frustrated by the lack of progress in his negotiations for a new long-term deal.  "I don't think the negotiation should have been this difficult," Brees said.  "We've reached out on a number of occasions and at times I've been frustrated by the lack of response."  Brees also sounded a bit offended by the team's current offer: "I would say that the numbers that have been thrown around by ESPN and some of these other places, at times, have been pretty heavily inflated."  The deadline for franchise players to sign long-term deals is July 16th.  We still expect Brees to be signed, sealed, and delivered before then.  As long as he's there for the start of training camp, his fantasy stock will be unaffected.

The Saints and QB Drew Brees have made no progress towards a new long-term deal, according to Pro Football Talk.  ESPN's Adam Schefter reports that the two sides haven't even been talking recently.  Slapped with the franchise tag back in February, Brees won't be attending the start of the team's offseason program on Monday.  We're talking about a lot of coin here, so this situation could bleed well into the summer.  The Saints need Brees around, especially with HC Sean Payton banned from the building.
