Patriots RB Shane Vereen suffered a groin injury in the 1st half of Sunday's game against the Ravens.  He pulled up lame while running a deep route down the left sideline.  New England is calling him questionable to return.

Patriots RB Shane Vereen entered Sunday's game against Miami with 33 catches in his last 4 outings.  That included a massive 12-153 receiving line in Week 14.  But he mustered only 3 catches for 8 yards against the Dolphins, adding 13 more yards on the ground.  Credit the Fins defense for eliminating Vereen from New England's attack.  (The focus on him helped WRs Julian Edelman and Danny Amendola combine for 23 catches.)  The good news is that Vereen still saw a healthy 7 targets and led the Patriots backfield with 48 snaps.  It's not as if he was phased out of the offense.  That means you can keep him in fantasy lineups for Week 16's game against the Ravens.

Patriots RB Stevan Ridley is a healthy scratch for today's game against the Texans.  The team isn't even going to mess around with a guy who has fumbled in 3 straight games.  RB Brandon Bolden figures to handle most of the early-down work today, with RB Shane Vereen handling the pass-catching duties.  Click here to see our updated projections for the Patriots backfield.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reports that Patriots RB Stevan Ridley is not expected to play a significant role in today's game against the Texans.  Schefter even hints that Ridley might be a healthy scratch.  His fumble-itis has finally landed him in the doghouse.  Ridley obviously needs to be on fantasy benches today.  Look for RB Brandon Bolden to handle early-down work, with RB Shane Vereen dominating the passing-down touches.  RB LeGarrette Blount also lost a fumble last week and can't be trusted in fantasy.

Patriots RB Stevan Ridley didn't step back on the field after his 1st-quarter fumble against the Broncos on Sunday night.  He finished with 4 carries for 14 yards.  Ridley has now lost 4 fumbles this season.  "It’s almost disgusting -- consecutive weeks, and personally as a player, my team deserves better," he said after the game.  "I come in. I work and bust my ass every day to come in here and not make the same mistakes. To have the same mistakes happen, there’s something I’ve got to do different, I’ve got to do better."  HC Bill Belichick has consistently gone back to Ridley the game after his previous fumbles, but there's no guarantee that'll be the case this time.  RB LeGarrette Blount also lost a fumble on Sunday night, leaving the backfield to RBs Shane Vereen and Brandon Bolden.

Patriots RB Shane Vereen (wrist) is officially active for tonight's game against the Panthers.  Both OC Josh McDaniels and the New England media have suggested that Vereen's role will be limited in his 1st action since Week 1.  But RB Brandon Bolden is a healthy scratch tonight, hinting at a potentially significant role for Vereen in the passing game.  He's a risky fantasy option, but we'd play him over any RB in this game besides Stevan Ridley.

Per ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Pats RB Shane Vereen (wrist) will be active for tonight’s matchup with Carolina.  Unsurprisingly, the team intends to ease Vereen back into action after an 8-game absence.  We'd be surprised if he handles more than 12 touches.

Patriots insiders Mike Reiss and Field Yates both expect RB Shane Vereen to play against the Panthers on Monday night.  Vereen has been out since Week 1, when he racked up 159 total yards while playing through a broken wrist.  Vereen should quickly re-assume a significant role in New England's backfield.  But his snaps figure to be limited this week, leaving him as a risky fantasy option.

The Patriots aren't yet committing to playing RB Shane Vereen against the Panthers on Monday night.  "It's good to have him back on the field," HC Bill Belichick said Thursday morning. "This will really be an opportunity for us to evaluate this week kind of where he is, give him some harder assignments and see how he's doing. He's been able to be active and participate, but I'd say it will be a higher level of competition for him this week on the practice field, as it should be. Gradually escalate the intensity of it and see how it goes."  Vereen has put in 5 practices over the past couple weeks.  We're tentatively expecting him to play on Monday night, but his snaps will be limited.

Patriots RB Shane Vereen (wrist) is eligible to return for Monday night's game against the Panthers.  The team hasn't said whether he'll play, but Vereen has been practicing for a couple weeks now.  “As soon as he’s ready and able to help us and we are able to play him, certainly he will have a role in the game,” OC Josh McDaniels said. “He definitely did make a big impact in Game 1.  I don’t know if we can expect him to do that right off the bat in his first game back, whenever that is, [but] we’ll look forward to having him back.”  Remember that Vereen torched the Bills for 101 rushing yards and 58 receiving yards in the opener.  He should quickly resume pass-catching duties and is capable of pushing RB Stevan Ridley for early-down work.  Vereen should be atop your waiver wire wish list if he's available in your league.

Patriots RB Shane Vereen (wrist) returned to practice on Wednesday.  He's eligible to play starting in Week 11.  If healthy, Vereen will quickly re-assume passing-down duties and might even push RB Stevan Ridley for early-down work.  Vereen had a monster Week 1 performance, racking up 101 rushing yards and 58 receiving yards while playing through that wrist injury.  If he's available in your fantasy league, add him now.

Patriots RB Shane Vereen (wrist) did not practice on Wednesday, the 1st day he was eligible.  But HC Bill Belichick says Vereen "isn't too far off" from getting back on the field.  It sounds like he's on track to be ready when he's eligible to play in Week 11.  Vereen should quickly re-assume passing-back duties and could be a valuable fantasy asset down the stretch.  We'd recommend stashing him in all PPR leagues and even non-PPR leagues of 12+ teams.

The Patriots have placed RB Shane Vereen (wrist) on IR-designated-for-return.  He won't be eligible to practice for 6 weeks and can't return to game action for 8.  New England has a Week 10 bye, so the earliest Vereen could return is Week 11.  It's disappointing news after the original report had him out only "a few weeks."  Vereen is now worth hanging on to only in deep fantasy leagues.  It's unclear what kind of role he'll return to.  Meanwhile, RB Stevan Ridley remains locked in as New England's lead back.  We'll see how the situation shakes out behind him with LeGarrette Blount, Brandon Bolden and Leon Washington.

NFL insider Jay Glazer reports that Patriots RB Shane Vereen broke a "small bone" in his wrist in his 1st play in Sunday's win over the Bills.  Vereen played the whole game with the injury but experienced numbness afterward.  He's undergoing surgery today and is expected to miss "a few weeks," per Glazer.  It's a tough break after Vereen busted out for 159 total yards in the opener.  He should return to a significant role once he's healthy, though, so Vereen is worth hanging on to in fantasy leagues.  Meanwhile, it's excellent luck for RB Stevan Ridley, who was benched after losing a 2nd-quarter fumble on Sunday.  New England now figures to go back to Ridley as the lead runner, starting Thursday night against the Jets.  LeGarrette Blount, Brandon Bolden and Leon Washington sit behind Ridley on the depth chart.

Patriots OC Josh McDaniels said Monday that no decisions have been made regarding the team's backfield for Week 2.  RB Stevan Ridley was benched in the opener after losing a 2nd-quarter fumble.  “Stevan’s got to do a better job of holding on to the football,” McDaniels said. “He knows that. And we’ll work hard with him on that.”  New England consistently went back to Ridley last year, despite his ball-security issues.  We'd expect to see him in the game plan for Thursday night's tilt against the Jets.  But RB Shane Vereen certainly earned a bigger role with his 159 total yards in Week 1.  Both guys are shaping up as RB2s for Thursday night's game.

Patriots RB Stevan Ridley lost a fumble in the 2nd quarter of Sunday's game against the Bills.  He didn't see the field the rest of the day. Ridley, of course, fumbled 4 times last year and was benched a couple of times.  It's also worth noting that the Pats went back to him as the lead back the following week each time.  We'll see if that's the case again on Thursday night against the Jets.  RB Shane Vereen's Week 1 performance will make it easier for New England to shy away from Ridley.  Vereen went for 101 yards on 14 carries, plus another 58 yards on 7 catches.  Vereen will be the much safer Week 2 fantasy play.
