Shane Vereen Fantasy Football News | Shark Bites

Most Recent Shark Bites

SI's Peter King made several observations at Patriots camp recently, and noted that he thinks RB Shane Vereen "is going to get a lot of touches from the look of things."  It confirms everything we've been hearing from the media reports out of Foxborough.  Vereen is athletic enough to line up almost anywhere on the field and looks poised to help make up for the deficiency in the TE department.  If Rob Gronkowski misses the first 6 games of the season, Vereen should have even more value.  The 3rd-year RB's ADP is steadily climbing as he looks like a viable RB2 in PPR leagues.

Patriots insider Karen Guregian believes RB Shane Vereen will be the team's "X-factor" this year.  Vereen has been working in the backfield, in the slot and out wide in training camp.  “Shane can do whatever the coaches ask him to do," teammate Stevan Ridley said. "Out of the backfield, or lining up at receiver, he can do it all. That’s something he had to do for Cal, and something he’s going to have to do for us.”  Guregian notes a "comfort level" that has formed between Vereen and QB Tom Brady.  It's becoming crystal clear that Vereen will play a significant pass-catching role for the Pats this year.  He could post 50+ catches and be a strong RB2 in PPR fantasy leagues.

ESPN's Field Yates suggests that Patriots RB Shane Vereen could be the biggest beneficiary of TE Aaron Hernandez's release.  Yates notes that Vereen has "natural talent as a receiver" and "the ability be used in various alignments around the formation."  Yates believes Vereen will be used in the backfield, in the slot and out wide this season.  The Cal product flashed plenty of play-making ability in the passing game in limited action last year.  Among his 15 catches in regular and postseason action, Vereen busted off 33 and 83-yarders.  He averaged a sizzling 16.9 yards per reception.  For more on Vereen's 2013 fantasy prospects, check out our PPR Hidden Gems feature.

Patriots insider Field Yates believes Brandon Bolden will have a chance to "earn" the backup RB job this summer.  "He has very good contact strength as a runner and can earn tough yards near the goal line," Yates writes.  Bolden averaged 5.6 carries per game in 2012.  Danny Woodhead is gone, but Shane Vereen looks like the favorite for the #2 job behind Stevan Ridley.  Bolden and LeGarrette Blount will battle for the leftover scraps.  Neither of those guys are likely to be fantasy assets in 2013.

The Chargers have signed RB Danny Woodhead to a 2-year deal.  The 5'8, 195-pounder is just a change-of-pace guy on the ground, but he's a top-notch receiver out of the backfield.  Woodhead has racked up 92 catches over the past 3 seasons in New England.  He'll likely step into a similar role with the Bolts.  If Woodhead is the only RB San Diego brings in this offseason, it'll be good news for RB Ryan Mathews.  Meanwhile, the Pats are left with Shane Vereen and Leon Washington behind Stevan Ridley.  Our money is on Vereen capturing the pass-catching role, which would put him squarely on the fantasy radar in PPR leagues.

Patriots RB Danny Woodhead (thumb) graduated to a full practice on Thursday.  It's confirmation that he'll play against the Ravens this weekend -- and that the thumb shouldn't be an issue.  What's unclear if what kind of role Woodhead will play after RB Shane Vereen's breakout performance last week.

The thumb injury Patriots RB Danny Woodhead suffered on Sunday isn't expected to keep him out of the AFC Championship Game this weekend.  But Woodhead might have been leap-frogged on the depth chart by the impressive Shane Vereen.  As always with the Pats, we won't know how the backfield will shake out until the game gets underway.

Patriots RB Shane Vereen has been mostly invisible since being selected in the 2nd round of the 2011 draft.  He was plenty visible in the team's playoff win over the Texans on Sunday.  With RB Danny Woodhead exiting early on with a thumb injury, Vereen stepped into the pass-catching role.  He finished with 5 grabs for 83 yards and 2 TDs, tacking on another 41 yards and a score on the ground.  Vereen displayed WR-like route-running in the passing game while often lining up outside the numbers.  That was the case on his 33-yard TD, when he simply ran past LB Barrett Ruud.  Vereen was also productive on the ground, averaging 5.9 yards per carry.  Stevan Ridley is still the lead back in New England's traditional offense -- he finished with 15 carries on Sunday.  But Vereen certainly brings more play-making ability as the no-huddle back than Danny Woodhead.  We'll see about Woodhead's injury, but Vereen will be the better fantasy bet against the Ravens this coming weekend.

Patriots RB Brandon Bolden has been suspended 4 games for violating the league's policy on performance-enhacing drugs.  The rooke flashed earlier this season with 30 carries for 191 yards and a score over a 2-game stretch, but he's been out the past 3 weeks with a knee injury.  In the meantime, Shane Vereen has taken over New England's #2 RB spot.  Bolden is off the fantasy radar.

Patriots RB Brandon Bolden (knee) has been ruled out for Sunday's game against the Rams.  The team hasn't told us anything about his injury or how long he'll be out.  RB Shane Vereen will once again operate as New England's change-of-pace, likely seeing 6-10 touches. Stevan Ridley will continue to serve as the lead back.

Patriots insider Christopher Price believes RB Shane Vereen "turned a corner" with his 8-carry, 49-yard effort against the Jets on Sunday.  HC Bill Belichick spoke highly of Vereen on Tuesday.  “Shane’s a smart kid, he has a good understanding of the game,” Belichick said. “He’s an elusive guy — he’s got good balance, plenty of strength for his size. [He’s] not the biggest guy, but [there’s] plenty of strength; he gives us some versatility there. I think he’s able to run inside, run in some traffic, but he’s a good space player, on the edge and in the passing game."  At this point, Vereen isn't a threat to Stevan Ridley's lead back role.  But Vereen might have already bypassed the injured Brandon Bolden for the #2 job.  He's worth a speculative add in deeper fantasy leagues.

11:49am EDT 9/30/12

Patriots RB Shane Vereen will make his 2012 debut today against the Bills.  He's been sidelined by a foot injury for over a month.  Vereen will play a bit role by RB Stevan Ridley for the time being.  He's worth monitoring but isn't a fantasy option.

Patriots RB Shane Vereen (foot) was limited in practice all week and is listed as questionable for this weekend's game against the Ravens.  It's the same spot he was in last week before being deactivated on gameday.  We're not expecting Vereen to play Sunday night.  He's not a fantasy option if he does.

Patriots RB Shane Vereen is listed as questionable for Sunday's game against the Cardinals after putting in a week of limited practices.  We're expecting him to be active, but he'll play a bit role on offense behind RB Stevan Ridley.  Vereen is worth hanging onto in deeper leagues but isn't a fantasy option right now.

Patriots RB Shane Vereen (foot) returned to practice on Wednesday.  It looks like he has a good shot of playing against the Cardinals this weekend.  But we'll have to see what kind of role he has before he becomes a fantasy option.  RB Stevan Ridley was ultra-impressive in the opener.

Patriots RB Shane Vereen (foot) has been ruled out for Sunday's game against the Titans.  He didn't practice at all this week, and there's no timetable for his return.  Meanwhile, Stevan Ridley is now locked in as the lead back this weekend.  He's a strong fantasy option against what looks like a leaky Titans run defense.  RB Danny Woodhead figures to play on passing downs but isn't a recommended fantasy starter.

Patriots RB Shane Vereen (foot) did not practice on Wednesday.  He's been out since getting hurt in the preseason finale.  We'll update his official status on Friday, but consider him iffy for Week 1.  Vereen won't be a fantasy option against the Titans.  RB Stevan Ridley is a good bet for 15+ touches.

Patriots RB Shane Vereen has yet to practice since injuring his foot in the preseason finale.  Reports out of New England had the injury as minor, but you never know with the Pats.  Consider Vereen questionable for Week 1.  RB Stevan Ridley would get a slight boost if Vereen can't go.  It'd also lock RB Danny Woodhead into the pass-catching role.
