Malik Washington, WR MIA

4:30pm EDT 4/27/24

Malik Washington in the mix for Dolphins No. 3 WR job

The Dolphins selected Virginia WR Malik Washington in Round 6 of the NFL Draft. A three-star recruit out of Georgia, Washington spent his first four years with an underwhelming Northwestern offense. He finished second on the team in catches and yards in 2021, then jumped to the team lead in both categories in 2022. The primary slot still tallied just 65-701-1 as a senior – but his underlying metrics at least supplied some promise. Washington posted a tiny 1.5% drop rate on 101 targets. He also forced 24 missed tackles, per Pro Football Focus. Last fall, we saw Washington’s best upon transferring to Virginia. The 5’8, 191-pounder crushed previous career highs with 111 catches, 1,384 yards, and 9 TDs. In fact, the yardage ranked fifth in the country. He excelled in contested situations and again proved slippery after the catch. Perhaps most impressive: Washington’s 3.15 yards per route run, which slotted 11th in a sample of 200 WRs. While undersized, Washington has the explosive ability to attract targets out of the slot. Note his 42.5-inch vertical and 10’6” broad jump from the Combine. WRs Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle will continue to dominate targets in Miami. But Washington has a real shot to win the No. 3 WR job at some point this season. His competition: Braxton Berrios, River Cracraft, and Erik Ezukanma.

Dolphins QB Tua Tagovailoa (shoulder, quad) was a full participant in Wednesday's practice. It's confirmation that he'll be ready to go for Sunday night's showdown vs. the Bills.

Dolphins QB Tua Tagovailoa didn't sound concerned about his injured left shoulder after Sunday's loss to the Ravens. “Shoulder’s good," he told the media. "Just sore.” We'll tentatively expect Tagovailoa to play vs. the Bills next weekend but keep a close eye on his status throughout the week.

Dolphins QB Tua Tagovailoa hurt his left shoulder in the fourth quarter of Sunday's game vs. the Ravens. He's officially questionable to return -- but he won't be back with Miami down by 30. We'll look for further updates on Tagovailoa's status heading into Week 18's game vs. the Bills for the AFC East title. QB Mike White is Miami's backup.

Ravens S Kyle Hamilton (knee) and CB Brandon Stephens (ankle) are inactive for today's game against the Dolphins. We've moved S Geno Stone up the DB rankings some. That improves the matchup for Dolphins WR Tyreek Hill, who you were already playing anyway. The spot gets a little better for QB Tua Tagovailoa as well, though he remains a risky option and sits just outside the top 12 in our Week 17 QB rankings.

HC Mike McDaniel and WR Tyreek Hill really elevated Tua’s game in 2022. The young QB managed to overcome concussion scares to post a nice breakout season (3,548-25-8 in 13 games). Tua stayed healthy (and similarly productive) in 2023 and could potentially sign a long-term deal this offseason.
