49ers RB Jordan Mason is earning some RB2 reps, splitting the position with RB Elijah Mitchell. Numerous reports have noted Mason running with authority in practice and looking like the better back.
HC Kyle Shannahan: ""Nothing against Elijah, but [Mason] runs at a very high level."
Rohan Chakravarthi: "49ers RB room looks real good right now. Jordan Mason just runs with authority. His burst and pure physicality is a great touch to the room. Elijah Mitchell looks healthy. Good burst. Seems fresh."
Mason is garnering praise and reps as the potential back-up to Christian McCaffrey. Though Mitchell has held the position for the last few seasons, Mason may be gaining ground.
Mason had an 84.7 PFF grade last season to Mitchell's 70.1, furthering the narrative that Mason is the better back.
The 49ers have a robust RB room with fourth round pick Isaac Guerendo as the #4 on the depth chart.
Being one of the best offenses in the league, it is worth noting who the handcuff to Christian McCaffrey will be this season.
Though Mitchell and Mason would split the job if McCaffrey goes down, finding an edge with who will earn the most snaps could be a league winning search.
