The Chiefs are signing RB Kenneth Walker III, according to multiple reports (including his own X feed).
What They're Saying
NFL Network's Ian Rapoport: "The Chiefs have been searching for some juice at the RB position for some time. It appears they found it."
The Setup
That's not a particularly good or meaningful line from Rapoport, but I'm including it because it's a good starting point to help us discern what we can expect from Walker's new role.
Sure, K.C. might have been searching for "juice" for a while. But the team hasn't been investing all that much in the pursuit.
The Chiefs (as you know) drafted RB Clyde Edwdards-Helaire at the end of Round 1 in 2020. He didsappointed big time and finally left town last year. But CEH's carries and receptions per game declined each season before he left.
So K.C. knew fairly early they weren't getting what they'd hoped. But here were their annual leading rushers for that span:
- 2020: CEH
- 2021: Darrel Williams (a 2018 undrafted free agent)
- 2022: Isiah Pacheco (seventh-round rookie)
- 2023: Pacheco
- 2024: Kareem Hunt (29-year-old signed during season)
- 2025: Hunt
The Chiefs were rumored to be pursuing Breece Hall ahead of last year's trade deadline, but the Jets reportedly never fielded an offer better than a fourth-round pick.
So this agreement looks like a precedent-setting investment for K.C.
2026 Fantasy Football Impact
Why'd they do it? Because the backfield just hasn't been delivering enough juice. Here's how the Chiefs have ranked in total RB PPR points since QB Patrick Mahomes' first starting season:
- 2025: 30th
- 2024: 26th
- 2023: 11th
- 2022: fifth
- 2021: 15th
- 2020: 25th
- 2019: 15th
Every one of those seasons found the RB points ranking lower than the Chiefs did in scoring for the year. That points to one of the league's best situations for TD scoring inflating the RB scores to these meh levels.
Here's a stat to highlight that positive situation: Even with the offense on whole disappointing vs. recent performance last year, Kansas City still led the league with 135 carries against defenses aligning six men or fewer in the box (per Fantasy Points Data). K.C. also ranked seventh and second in that category the previous two years.
Walker's arrival should put more defenders in the box. But doing that will also leave more room for Mahomes to carve up defenses.
Expect Walker to get much steadier workloads with his new team than he achieved the past two years in Seattle. He brings clear RB1-level upside into 2026 (and beyond).
Rankings Movement
Walker now resides inside the top 10 of our RB rankings across formats. He'll be worth considering as early as the middle of Round 2 in 2026 drafts.
Projected ADP Movement
Walker's early Underdog Fantasy ADP -- RB15 -- shows that drafters anticipated him leaving Seattle and targeted the upside. Don't be surprised if landing with the Chiefs pushes that higher, though.
Dynasty Impact
A multi-year deal with the Chiefs obviously boosts Walker's outlook beyond this season as well. But that makes this a bad time to try to buy him in dynasty leagues.
Everyone is bound to like his fantasy value better today than before the Chiefs news.
If you're in rebuild mode, on the other hand, this might be a good time to see just how high a price you can get for selling Walker.
Of course, holding him would be just fine as well.
