ESPN's Bob Holtzman reports that Bengals QB Andy Dalton had the cast removed from his injured throwing thumb.  But his status for Saturday night's game against the Steelers remains "unknown," per Holtzman.  Cincinnati will likely test Dalton's ability to take snaps, grip and throw the ball this week.  He still seems worse than 50/50 to play this weekend.

Bengals QB A.J. McCarron hurt his left wrist on the final play of Monday night's OT loss at Denver. McCarron took his eyes off the approaching shotgun snap and then hurt the wrist diving after the fumble in an unsuccessful recovery attempt. He told reporters after the game that he was headed for an MRI and hopeful for good news but that he didn't know how bad it was. On the same day, NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported that QB Andy Dalton remains a few weeks away from returning to the field. Dalton will not only miss Week 17, but the team reportedly doesn't expect him back until the Divisional round of the playoffs. The Bengals will need to beat Baltimore this Sunday and hope for Denver to lose to San Diego if they're to secure a 1st-round bye. Keith Wenning's listed 3rd on the QB depth chart right now. Starting him would obviously ding the fantasy value of WR A.J. Green and any other Bengals receiving options in play.

The Bengals "hope" QB Andy Dalton (thumb) can return for the playoffs, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.  Dalton avoided surgery but still needs to wait for the bone to heal.  He reportedly believes a Week 17 return is "possible," per Rapoport, but that seems like a long shot.  Dalton can be dropped in redraft fantasy leagues.

Bengals QB Andy Dalton does not need surgery on his injured thumb, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.  There's still no concrete timetable for his return.  Fantasy owners need to be planning to be without Dalton the rest of the way.  Cincinnati would be happy to get him back for the start of the playoffs.  QB A.J. McCarron will definitely start this weekend's game against the 49ers.

Bengals HC Marvin Lewis said after Sunday's loss that QB Andy Dalton (thumb) won't play against the 49ers next week.  Lewis wouldn't give any other details about Dalton's injury but did say, "I can't heal bones."  It sure sounds like Dalton is dealing with a broken throwing thumb, but we'll wait for confirmation.  QB A.J. McCarron will start for Cincinnati as long as Dalton is out.  The Alabama product completed 22 of 32 passes for 280 yards, 2 TDs and 2 INTs in relief today.  McCarron is just a low-end QB2.

Update: Dalton told reporters afterward that he has a fractured thumb and will visit a specialist on Monday.  He's very likely out for the remainder of the regular season.

Bengals QB Andy Dalton injured his right (throwing) thumb in the 1st quarter of Sunday's game against the Steelers.  He headed back to the locker room and is officially questionable to return.  Cincinnati will turn to QB A.J. McCarron if Dalton can't come back.

Update: Dalton has been ruled out for the rest of the game.

Bengals QB Andy Dalton got checked for a neck injury on the sideline Saturday night after 3 straight goal-line rushing attempts. He didn't return to the game after that series, but HC Marvin Lewis said at halftime that his QB is fine. Looks like nothing to worry about here.

Bengals WR A.J. Green was carted off the practice field on Wednesday. Beat writers believe that he suffered a re-aggravation of his right toe injury, but we should learn more after practice. We already know that Marvin Jones (ankle) missed Wednesday’s session. He remains very iffy to play Sunday vs. Carolina. If both Green and Jones sit out, Cincinnati will be left with Mohamed Sanu and Dane Sanzenbacher at WR. That would obviously put a huge dent in Andy Dalton’s outlook.

The Bengals are expecting WR Marvin Jones, returning from his broken foot this week, to help in the red zone.  "We can't keep settling for field goals. At some point quickly that becomes critical," WRs coach James Urban said. "The natural inclination last year with Marv scoring touchdowns, hopefully that helps. The plays are there, we have the players to make the plays we just haven't made them the way we should. Hopefully Marv can help us."  Nine of Jones' 10 TDs last year came in the red zone.  He won't be a reliable fantasy option right away but could eventually emerge as an upside WR3.  And his return will boost QB Andy Dalton's fantasy stock.

The Bengals and QB Andy Dalton have agreed to a 6-year, $115 million deal.  We figured Cincinnati wouldn't let Dalton get away in free agency next offseason, but that's still a ton of coin to give a guy who's yet to win a playoff game.  Dalton is now signed with the Bengals through the 2019 season.  He sits squarely in QB2 territory in our Dynasty Rankings.  This still looks like a good time to sell high.

Geoff Hobson of Bengals.com has reported for a while that the Bengals expect to pass less under new OC Hue Jackson than they did under Jay Gruden.  On Thursday, he put numbers to that expectation.  "New offensive coordinator Hue Jackson is committed to changing it and I think he’s also committed to taking the load off Andy Dalton," Hobson wrote.  "A big adjustment that has to make (sic) is cutting his pass attempts from 586 to closer to Russell Wilson’s number of 407."  Just to be clear, this wasn't Hobson reporting that comparison from Bengals people.  It was him answering a mailbag question.  Beat writers often know their teams better than anyone outside the franchises, but they also often get into trouble when they try to dabble in projections. We're simply not buying that the Bengals will suddenly turn into the league's most run-heavy team, which is what Seattle has been over the past 2 years. More people need to realize that Gruden's Bengals already leaned run and that Hue Jackson's offenses have averaged just 44% run over his 4 years as an OC or HC. Just 1 of those teams reached 46% run. By comparison, the Seahawks have run 55% of the time and 52.3% of the time the past 2 years. Dalton's pass attempts will fall because Cincinnati ran the most total offensive plays in franchise history last year. But don't forecast utter doom for all Bengals passing-game pieces.  DS Insiders can check out our 2014 projections for Dalton and the rest of the Bengals.

Bengals WRs have noticed more zip on QB Andy Dalton's passes this spring.  “He’s got a lot of zing, a lot of velocity to him," Marvin Jones said.  Mohamed Sanu agreed: “Best I’ve seen him. I think it’s everything. He’s put a lot of work in the offseason, just seeing how he approaches it ... it’s on you fast. You turn around and you’re like, ‘whoa.’”  Dalton worked with guru Dr. Tom House on his mechanics this offseason and apparently got good results.  Arm strength was never a major issue for him, though.  The more significant concern heading into 2014 is the run-heavy offense new OC Hue Jackson is installing.

New Bengals QB AJ McCarron told Sirius XM NFL Radio that we didn't really see him at full power in college.  "A lot of people don't realize I wasn't healthy at Alabama," McCarron said.  "I sacrificed a lot to play for coach Saban and that university; I played through a lot of injuries and we never leaked it because that's just the way it is."  Will we get a healthy McCarron in the pros?  And did these injuries help push the 2013 Heisman runner-up into the 5th round?  McCarron landed in a decent spot for his future starting chances.  Incumbent Andy Dalton has performed solidly overall but also proved erratic -- especially in 3 straight 1st-round playoff exits.  We don't expect McCarron to get a real shot at starting this year.  We'll see if Dalton can develop and hold off challengers beyond that.  His contract also runs out at the end of 2014.

QB A.J. McCarron expected to be a 1st-round pick.  He ended up dropping to the 5th, where the Bengals finally snatched him up.  McCarron has been compared to new teammate Andy Dalton.  He's an average athlete with an average arm.  But McCarron is accurate in the short and intermediate games.  And he knows how to get the ball to his playmakers, with a good understanding of coverages.  Cincinnati is an interesting landing spot for McCarron.  Dalton is entering the final year of his contract and might need to take the next step in his development (i.e. win a playoff game) to earn a new deal from the Bengals.  If that doesn't happen, McCarron could be in the starting mix in 2015.

Bengals insider Geoff Hobson expects QB Andy Dalton's pass attempts to decrease under new OC Hue Jackson.  "Jackson sounds like he is out of the less is more school and he’s talking like he’s not going to put as much pressure on Dalton to win games with his arm," Hobson writes.  Dalton chucked it 586 times in 2013 -- 8th most in the league.  Look for that number to shrink this coming season as Cincinnati relies more on its running game.  Hobson also believes that Jackson might call more short passes, so Dalton's career-high 7.3 yards-per-attempt average this past year figures to dip in 2014.  He's a prime candidate to be over-drafted this summer after finishing as a top 5 QB in 2013.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reports that the Bengals will promote Hue Jackson to OC.  Jackson has spent the past 2 seasons in a variety of assistant coaching roles in Cincinnati.  He was with Oakland the 2 years prior to that -- 1 as OC and 1 as HC.  He also served as Washington's OC in 2003 and Atlanta's OC in 2007.  Jackson oversaw a strong rushing attack in Oakland.  The Raiders ranked 2nd and 7th, respectively, in rushing in his 2 years there.  They ran the ball 51% of the time in 2010 and 47% in 2011.  We like the news for RB Gio Bernard.

If you're hoping the Bengals will move on from QB Andy Dalton sometime soon ... don't.  HC Marvin Lewis said Monday that he continues to believe in his QB.  "He had another very good season," Lewis said, per the team website.  "He’s progressed well.  We need to continue to do things to make his job just easier and easier to do."  We see Dalton as a limited talent with a penchant for inconsistent play.  Another report this week stated that Bengals owner/GM wanted to draft 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick when OC Jay Gruden preferred Dalton 3 years ago.  WR A.J. Green and the rest of the Bengals' offensive talent appears stuck with the "Red Rifle" for the near future.

The weather forecast for this afternoon's Patriots-Bengals game calls for 50% chance of rain and 14 mph winds.  It's been raining all morning, so the field will likely be sloppy.  It's not enough to downgrade either team's passing game, but we wonder how the field conditions will impact WR Danny Amendola's usage.  Amendola is a risk/reward fantasy option for Week 5.  Click here to see where he sits in our rankings.
