Trey Lance completed an improbable rise to the NFL by landing with the 49ers at Pick #3 in the 2021 NFL Draft. Lance spent just 1 season as a starting QB in high school and then chose North Dakota State at the FCS level after being lightly recruited. He followed NFL backup Easton Stick there and balled out in his lone starting campaign. Lance completed 66.9% of his throws at 9.7 yards per attempt with 28 TDs and nary an INT. He led that Bison team to a 16-0 record and the FCS national title, adding 1,100 yards and 14 TDs on the ground. Lance boasts the size and willingness to be Josh Allen-like as a goal-line rusher. Also like Allen, he sports a big throwing arm. Lance started just 17 college games and might be asked to sit for a year before getting his starting shot in the pros. (Even Jimmy Kepouros, an NDSU WR, calls Lance “really raw.”) But the rushing ability alone gives Lance immediate fantasy upside whenever he does hit the field. This is a nice landing spot with a bright offensive mind in HC Kyle Shanahan and a nice group of pass-catchers in George Kittle, Brandon Aiyuk and Deebo Samuel. We’ll see whether the Niners hang on to QB Jimmy Garoppolo -- and if he can hang on to the starting job for any or all of 2021. Bet on Lance hitting the field at some point this season.
The 49ers swung a massive trade for the #3 overall pick in next month's draft, sending the #12 pick, a 2021 3rd-rounder and 1st-rounders in 2022 and 2023 to the Dolphins. The 'Niners clearly have their eyes on a QB. ESPN's Adam Schefter hears that the team doesn't have 1 specific rookie in mind but is "good with the options" that will be available. That'll be some combination of BYU's Zach Wilson, Ohio State's Justin Fields and North Dakota State's Trey Lance. Schefter also reports that San Francisco "has no plans" to trade QB Jimmy Garoppolo -- but his days as the starter are clearly numbered. The Dolphins, meanwhile, are reaffirming their commitment to QB Tua Tagovailoa with this trade.
The 49ers have designated QB Jimmy Garoppolo to return from IR. That doesn't necessarily mean he'll play again this season; it simply opens the 21-day practice window. With just 2 weeks remaining, that means the team could have Garoppolo practice the rest of the way without needing to decide on activating him. We wouldn't bet on Garoppolo taking the field in Week 16. C.J. Beathard appears in line to face the Cardinals on Saturday.
Update: Cam Inman reports that Garoppolo will practice but "won't play in games." With Nick Mullens set for elbow surgery, Beathard looks like the starter for the final 2 games.
ESPN's Adam Schefter reports that 49ers QB Jimmy Garoppolo is expected to miss at least the next 6 weeks with what has been deemed a high-ankle injury. The QB could remain out even longer if his injury winds up requiring surgery, according to Schefter. Garoppolo obviously doesn't belong on any redraft fantasy football rosters during this span. QB Nick Mullens is in play for deeper leagues, including 2-QB and superflex formats. We'll see, though, whether he can hold the job. C.J. Beathard relieved Mullens in the Week 4 loss to Philadelphia and then Garoppolo in the following week's loss to the Dolphins.
49ers QB Jimmy Garoppolo was pulled in the 4th quarter of Sunday's game against the Seahawks. He appeared to tweak his knee or ankle taking a sack on his final snap and headed back to the locker room with trainers. Garoppolo was horrible before exiting, throwing for 84 yards, 0 TDs and 1 INT against a leaky Seattle defense. We'll see if Garoppolo is healthy enough to start Thursday night's game vs. the Packers -- and if San Francisco sticks with him.
Update: The 49ers announced Garoppolo with an ankle injury.
49ers QB Jimmy Garoppolo (ankle) will start Sunday night’s game against the Rams, HC Kyle Shanahan said on Friday. Garoppolo reportedly had a good week of practice after his disastrous half vs. the Dolphins. Make Garoppolo earn his way back into your fantasy lineup after that dud.
49ers HC Kyle Shanahan said he pulled QB Jimmy Garoppolo from this past week's game against Miami because his injured ankle was impacting his play. Shanny wouldn't say whether Garoppolo will be able to start this weekend's game vs. the Rams. "We'll see how he is on Wednesday," Shanahan said. "I expect him to be at least the same, if not better. So, hopefully we can get a week of that and have no setbacks (on) Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. And hopefully we get him out there Sunday night." We'll track Garoppolo's status, but plan on avoiding the 49ers QB situation in Week 6 fantasy lineups.
49ers QB Jimmy Garoppolo was benched at halftime of Sunday's game against Miami. He was horrible in the first 30 minutes, completing just 7 of 17 passes for 77 yards and 2 INTs. QB C.J. Beathard replaced Garoppolo. We're assuming the 'Niners will go back to Garoppolo next week, but we'll see what HC Kyle Shanahan says.
49ers QB Jimmy Garoppolo (ankle) will return for Sunday's game against the Dolphins, HC Kyle Shanahan said. Garoppolo is a significant upgrade for San Francisco's pass-catchers and is a high-upside QB2 in this matchup. The 'Niners are implied for 29.25 points -- 6th highest on the week.
49ers QB Jimmy Garoppolo put in a limited practice on Wednesday, his 1st since suffering a high-ankle sprain back in Week 2. It gives him a chance to return for this weekend's game against the Dolphins. We'll see how Garoppolo trends over the next couple of days.
49ers QB Jimmy Garoppolo (ankle) is out for Sunday night’s game against the Eagles. QB Nick Mullens gets another start and is on the radar in 2-QB and superflex leagues after chucking for 343 yards and a score last week.
49ers QB Jimmy Garoppolo remained sidelined on Wednesday. That's not a good start in his quest to return for this weekend's game vs. the Eagles. QB Nick Mullens played well in Garoppolo's absence last week, completing 25 of 36 passes for 343 yards, 1 TD and 0 INTs.
49ers HC Kyle Shanahan confirmed that QB Nick Mullens will start Sunday's game against the Giants. QB Jimmy Garoppolo's status for Week 4 and beyond remains uncertain with that high-ankle sprain. Mullens played well in 8 starts back in 2018, but he's just a lower-end QB2 for Week 3.
49ers HC Kyle Shanahan said Wednesday that QB Nick Mullens "most likely" will start against the Giants this weekend. QB Jimmy Garoppolo hasn't been ruled out with his high-ankle sprain just yet, but it sounds like he'll miss at least 1 game. Mullens was solid in 8 starts back in 2018, completing 64% of his passes, averaging 8.3 yards per attempt and averaging 285 yards and 1.6 TDs per game. He's just a QB2 in fantasy but should be able to keep this offense on schedule.
Niners HC Kyle Shanahan says QB Jimmy Garoppolo's high-ankle sprain isn't serious, according to multiple reports. The team considers Garoppolo week to week, and he might have a shot to play the Giants this Sunday. We'll see how the week goes for Garoppolo. Nick Mullens would start if Garoppolo misses further time.
