NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports that Raiders QB Jimmy Garoppolo is expected to be recovered from his foot surgery "long before training camp." The QB will need to pass a physical, of course, but it doesn't sound like there should be big issues on this front. Garoppolo has tumbled down best ball draft boards since news broke of his spring surgery, but he obviously remains the top bet to start for the Raiders this season. Treat him as a big late value, especially in formats where drafting three QBs makes sense.
Raiders QB Jimmy Garoppolo underwent surgery in March to address a left foot injury he suffered against the Dolphins in December, according to The Athletic. The 49ers reportedly believed that Garoppolo didn't need surgery, but the Raiders disagreed after giving Garoppolo a physical before he signed. There's no known timetable for Garoppolo's return to the field, but HC Josh McDaniels admitted that he “could be” out until at least training camp. “We don’t play a game for 100 days,” McDaniels added. “Everything that’s happened since we signed Jimmy, we knew ahead of time. … Certainly had an awareness of all of it. Our preference is not to push it and rush anybody back at this point in time.” We'll keep tabs on Garoppolo's recovery. But he wasn't appealing even as a QB2 before this news and certainly isn't now.
The Raiders will be signing WR Jakobi Meyers to a three-year, $33 million deal, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. The pact will reportedly include $21 million in guaranteed money. This fit seems somewhat odd. Meyers does reunite with HC Josh McDaniels, who served as New England's OC for three of Meyers' four seasons there. But the 26-year-old (until Nov. 9) wideout joins an offense that already sports WR Davante Adams, TE Darren Waller, and WR Hunter Renfrow with annual average salaries over $10 million. Meyers also ran 64.5% of his routes with the Patriots from the slot, according to Pro Football Focus. That's also Renfrow's primary position (69.7% of career routes; 86% in 2022). We're assuming Meyers will be the second wideout (with Adams) in two-WR alignments, which will keep Renfrow's ceiling down. Meyers likely could have found more target share available elsewhere. It is, at least, a solid corps of receivers for new Raiders QB Jimmy Garoppolo. That said, we're not excited for the fantasy outlook on the QB, Meyers, or Renfrow.
QB Jimmy Garoppolo and the Raiders have reportedly agreed to a three-year, $67.5 million deal. The former 49er will receive $34 million in guaranteed money and reunite with HC Josh McDaniels, dating back to their days together with the Patriots. Garoppolo has struggled with various injuries over the course of his career but has played fairly well when healthy. We expect him to maintain QB2-level production in Las Vegas as more of a game manager that's better for your real-life NFL team than your fantasy team. That said, Garoppolo kept pace with QB Derek Carr, the man he's replacing, in fantasy PPG from Week 5 through Week 12 (16.3 and 16.4, respectively) before a foot injury ended his season. Plus, anyone paired up with WR Davante Adams carries some appeal in superflex leagues. This move doesn't prohibit the Raiders from pursuing a younger QB in the NFL Draft this April, but at least they have a bridge plan in place at a minimum.
49ers QB Jimmy Garoppolo does not have a Lisfranc injury and won't need surgery, ESPN's Adam Schefter reports. Garoppolo could be back in 7-8 weeks, "if rehab goes smoothly," Schefter adds. Seven weeks would put Garoppolo back on the field for the Divisional Round of the playoffs. We'll keep an eye on his progress. Garoppolo is still a guy to avoid in playoff fantasy contests, but this news helps the outlooks on San Francisco's skill-position players.
49ers QB Jimmy Garoppolo broke his left foot in the win over Miami and will miss the rest of the season, HC Kyle Shanahan said afterward. It's a significant loss for a 'Niners squad that already lost QB Trey Lance. That leaves the starting job to QB Brock Purdy, who played surprisingly well against the Dolphins, completing 25 of 37 passes for 210 yards, 2 TDs and 1 INT. Purdy will only be a fantasy option in 2-QB and Superflex leagues. But he seems capable of keeping this offense afloat the rest of the way.
49ers QB Jimmy Garoppolo was carted to the locker room during the 1st quarter of Sunday's game vs. Miami. He appeared to injured his left leg on a sack. We'll update Garoppolo's status when we learn more. QB Brock Purdy has entered for San Francisco.
Update: Garoppolo has an ankle injury and is questionable to return, the team announced.
Niners WR Brandon Aiyuk caught all 6 of his targets in Sunday's win over the Rams. He tallied 81 yards and caught a TD throw from RB Christian McCaffrey. San Francisco went without WR Deebo Samuel. McCaffrey led the team in targets and receptions, with TE George Kittle (5 targets) following McCaffrey and Aiyuk. QB Jimmy Garoppolo completed 21 of 25 passes (84%) for 235 yards and TDs to McCaffrey and Kittle.
Niners QB Jimmy Garoppolo racked up 303 yards and 2 TDs (plus an INT) in Sunday's lopsided loss to the Chiefs. He went 25-of-37 passing (67.6%, 8.2 yards per attempt) before turning it over to QB Brock Purdy to close out the game. WR Brandon Aiyuk led the team in targets (11) and catches (7), tallying 82 yards. TE George Kittle caught 6 of 9 targets for 98 yards and a TD. WR Ray-Ray McCloud snagged the other TD, among 4 catches for 65 yards. WR Deebo Samuel caught 5 of his 7 looks for 42 yards, adding 2 yards on his lone carry. San Francisco gets a Week 8 rematch with a Rams team it hit up for 327 total yards in a 24-9 Week 4 victory. The Rams have been a tough scoring matchup for QBs and TEs but slightly positive for WRs this season. Samuel has gone over 90 receiving yards and 100 total yards in 4 straight regular-season meetings with the Rams.
The Panthers are trading RB Christian McCaffrey to the 49ers, ESPN's Adam Schefter reports. It's obviously a big upgrade in terms of supporting cast for McCaffrey. The 49ers rank 19th in points per game and 18th in yards per game, while the Panthers sit 27th in points per game and dead last in yards per game. San Francisco is also a balanced to run-leaning offense, so McCaffrey should see plenty of rushing volume. We do worry a bit about his target volume, though, in an offense that also features Deebo Samuel, Brandon Aiyuk and George Kittle. Overall, we'd consider this about a wash for the fantasy value of McCaffrey, who currently sits 4th among RBs in PPR points per game. We'll see if he'll play vs. the Chiefs this weekend. Carolina, meanwhile, is left with a backfield committee of D'Onta Foreman and Chuba Hubbard in a bad offense. We'll see exactly what that workload split looks like, but neither guy is an exciting fantasy option.
Update: Carolina will receive 2nd-, 3rd- and 4th-round picks in 2023, plus a 5th-rounder in 2024, according to Schefter.
Update: NFL Network's Ian Rapoport calls McCaffrey "likely" to play vs. the Chiefs on Sunday and adds, "expect a red-zone package." We'll see what else we hear about McCaffrey's projected Week 7 role.
Niners QB Jimmy Garoppolo threw for 296 yards, 2 TDs and 2 INTs on 29-of-41 passing in Sunday's 28-14 loss to the Falcons. That's a pass-attempt total he matched just once all of last year, and it's more than 10 attempts higher than any previous appearance this season. A Week 7 meeting with the Chiefs could boost passing volume as well.
ESPN's Adam Schefter reports 49ers QB Trey Lance suffered a "significant" right ankle injury in the Week 2 win over the Seahawks. Lance is expected to need surgery that will "likely" end his season. You can hang on to him on fantasy rosters until we get official confirmation that Lance's season is over, which figures to come tomorrow. San Francisco will turn back to QB Jimmy Garoppolo, which will mean a significant shift in the offense. The 49ers' pass rate will climb, and there will be more carries to go around since Garoppolo won't be taking many.
49ers QB Trey Lance injured his right leg in the 1st quarter of Sunday's game vs. the Seahawks. He had to be carted off the field and is obviously done for the day. We'll pass along an update when we get one. QB Jimmy Garoppolo has entered for the 'Niners.
The 49ers remain "fully behind" QB Trey Lance, despite the decision to retain QB Jimmy Garoppolo, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. Rapoport adds that the team simply couldn't pass up the opportunity to keep Garoppolo as a quality backup for just $6.5 million -- and that a midseason trade is still possible.
The 49ers and QB Jimmy Garoppolo are finalizing a new deal that will make him the "highest paid backup in the NFL," according to NFL Network. It's a surprising move after the 'Niners basically said all offseason that Garoppolo had no future with the team. San Francisco has committed to QB Trey Lance as the starter -- but Garoppolo's presence will make it easier to bench Lance if he struggles this year. We're not moving Lance in the QB rankings, but his fantasy floor is now a little low.
Update: ESPN's Adam Schefter reports that Garoppolo is getting $6.5 million guaranteed with "playtime bonuses that can boost it another nearly $9 million." So it's a backup-level deal with upside in case Garoppolo ends up playing more than expected.
