Vikings Get Jordan Mason to Play RB2

The 49ers are trading RB Jordan Mason to the Vikings, according to multiple reports. Mason is getting a two-year, $7 million deal with Minnesota that carries a max value of $12 million. The Niners are getting back just a 2026 sixth-rounder and a pick swap in this year's draft, according to NFL Network.

2025 Fantasy Football Impact

I was surprised when San Francisco tendered Mason at the second-round level as a restricted free agent. But it's clear now the team did so just to make sure he didn't leave for nothing.

The compensation here is light, which says the 49ers didn't actually sweat losing the player -- but knew there would be a market.

The money in Minnesota says that Mason will be more than just a backup to Aaron Jones. The Vikings re-signed the veteran for $10 million a year over the next two years. But Jones is 30 and coming off career highs in carries and total touches.

Minnesota has obviously committed to Jones continuing to lead the backfield. But the team would also be wise to lighten that load some. And this move says they plan to do so.

Of course, it's tough to say just how much work we can expect Mason to siphon. Don't head into 2025 expecting Mason to approach fantasy-starter level in standalone value. But he'll be draftable as a reserve and carry big handcuff upside.

Dynasty Impact

Mason will be 26 when the season begins and at least makes sense on dynasty rosters that also have Jones.

He'll also be an upside stash for those who don't have Jones. The veteran back averaged fewer than 13 carries per game in three straight seasons before last year. He has also missed time in five of his eight pro campaigns.

Other Winners & Losers

Isaac Guerendo is a big winner.

San Francisco's always a threat to draft more backfield competition. But Guerendo arrived as a fourth-round pick last year and performed well when pressed into duty.

He's at least the best bet right now to hit September as San Francisco's RB2.
