        Jared Goff gets big extension

        Jared Goff Headshot

The Lions and QB Jared Goff agreed to a four-year, $212 million extension with $170 million guaranteed. The $53 million annual salary makes Goff the league's second-highest player (for now), behind only QB Joe Burrow. The new deal keeps Goff under contract with Detroit through 2027 and includes an option for 2028, according to NFL Network's Tom Pelissero.

        2024 Fantasy Football Impact

Goff's 4,575 passing yards and 30 TDs last season were both the second-best marks of his career. He's improved his per-game fantasy production across all three seasons with the Lions, finishing QB25 in 2021, QB15 in 2022, and then QB14 last year.

Goff is back with OC Ben Johnson for 2024 and returns last year's top three targets in WR Amon-Ra St. Brown, TE Sam LaPorta, and RB Jahmyr Gibbs. The continuity is good news for his 2024 fantasy outlook, although Goff's lack of rushing ability keeps him from a truly exciting ceiling.

        Dynasty Impact

The extension also stabilizes Goff's long-term dynasty value. We'll see how long OC Ben Johnson sticks around (he was a popular HC candidate this offseason), but the Lions have WR Amon-Ra St. Brown signed through 2028 and TE Sam LaPorta signed through 2026. Detroit also extended RT Penei Sewell through 2029 this offseason.

Goff will also continue to get to play eight or nine games per season at Ford Field. He's averaged 264.5 yards and 2.2 TDs per game at home over the past three seasons vs. 245.5 yards and 1.0 TDs on the road.

Goff's lack of rushing production prevents him from being a difference-making dynasty asset. But he's passable in 1-QB leagues and a nice QB2 in superflex.

        Other Winners & Losers

Although he's not an elite QB, the stability this Goff extension brings to Detroit's offense is good news for WR Amon-Ra St. Brown and TE Sam LaPorta.

It's not as good news for WR Jameson Williams and his downfield potential. Goff has regularly ranked near the bottom of the league in percentage of passes to travel 20+ yards downfield.
