The Giants signed RB Najee Harris “under the premise that he's going to be a significant contributor,” ESPN’s Jordan Raanan writes in a detailed look at this suddenly crowded backfield. Ranaan adds that RB Cam Skattebo is still the “top option” but that RB Tyrone Tracy has been a “regular” with the first-team offense in camp and that RB Devin Singletary “shouldn’t be counted out.”
What They're Saying
Harbaugh on adding Harris: "I mean, football's competitive, the NFL's competitive, and we're building the strongest team we can. And [Harris is] a really good football player. So that's it. ... He's an experienced back. Anybody that's watched him play knows what type of a back he is. He's a downhill runner, physical runner. I've played against him a lot. I have a good feel for who he is as a player.
2026 Fantasy Football Impact: Uncertainty Adds Risk
This backfield projection felt relatively clean a couple of weeks ago: Skattebo as the lead back and Tracy a change-of-pace option.
It feels messy now. Skattebo, Tracy, and Singletary formed a three-man committee with the first-team offense in the preseason opener. And then Harris arrived.
Skattebo played fine in that first exhibition, carrying four times for 19 yards. But HC John Harbaugh conceded that Skattebo is not "100% twitchy and explosive yet," per Raanan.
Tracy, meanwhile, is off to a brutal start this preseason. He blew a blitz pickup in the opener that got QB Jaxson Dart crunched, then played behind Singletary and fumbled inside the red zone in the second exhibition.
This will be a backfield to monitor closely over the next couple of weeks. Skattebo remains the best fantasy bet but looks riskier now than he did earlier this month. Tracy, Singletary, and Harris all seem to have a chance to emerge as the No. 2 RB, making all three tough clicks in drafts right now.
“The four capable running backs make it hard to predict the Giants' backfield carries at this point,” Ranaan writes.
