Ameer Abdullah Fantasy Football News | Shark Bites

Although a Sunday morning Ian Rapoport report indicated the Lions are hopeful for RB Ameer Abdullah's return this season, ESPN's Adam Schefter is reporting the opposite. According to Schefter, Detroit believes the torn ligament in Abdullah's left foot will cost him the rest of the year. As a fantasy football owner, your takeaway should be that Abdullah's outlook for 2016 is grim at best. He's cuttable in most leagues, though you can stash him for now if you have an IR spot or a particularly deep roster. Theo Riddick got off to a rough start Sunday against Green Bay, losing 10 yards on his 1st 5 carries of the game. That only adds upside to rookie RB Dwayne Washington, who was a popular waiver target heading into Week 3. Washington should be owned in most leagues of 10+ teams coming out of this weekend.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport hears that the Lions "hope" to get RB Ameer Abdullah (foot) back after their Week 10 bye. He was placed on IR, but Detroit can make him their "designated to return" player. That'd make him eligible to return to practice in Week 9 and play Week 11. It'd likely be at least another week beyond that before we could trust Abdullah in fantasy lineups, so he's still only worth stashing in leagues with deep benches or an IR spot.

The Lions aren't ruling out RB Ameer Abdullah (foot) for the rest of the season. They placed him on IR today, but they can tag him as designated-to-return and reactivate him as soon as Week 11. "I'm certainly not going to go into all the details, but he did have surgery and we'll see what happens," HC Jim Caldwell said. "He's always proven to be a pretty quick healer." We still don't know the exact nature of Abdullah's injury, but foot issues are tough to return from. We wouldn't bother stashing him outside of extremely deep leagues or leagues with an IR spot.

The Lions have placed RB Ameer Abdullah on IR with the foot injury suffered last week, per NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. We're still waiting to find out more about Abdullah's exact injury, and there's a chance Detroit will slap him with the designated-to-return label. Even that would cost him the next 8 weeks, though, so go ahead and drop Abdullah in fantasy leagues. Theo Riddick takes over as Detroit's lead runner and will maintain a big passing-game role. He has a shot at weekly RB2 value. Dwayne Washington also figures to take on a bigger role and is worth a wait-and-see stash. Zach Zenner also figures to play after being a healthy scratch the first 2 games.

X-rays on Lions RB Ameer Abdullah's injured foot came back negative, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. That rules out a Jones fracture, which we heard being tossed around as a possibility last night. Abdullah is still scheduled for more testing, though, and isn't out of the woods yet. We should get another update later today.

Lions RB Ameer Abdullah left in the 2nd quarter of Sunday's game against the Titans with a lower-body injury. It looked like a heel or ankle injury. We'll update his status when we learn more.

Update: The Lions announced that Abdullah has a foot injury and won't return.

The Lions plan on speeding up their offensive tempo and running more no-huddle this season. "The faster you can push the tempo when you want to, makes it more stressful on the defense," QB Matt Stafford said. "If you feel like you’re playing at normal speed and they think you’re playing really fast you know it feels a whole lot better for us." Per Pro Football Focus, Detroit has gone no-huddle on 62% of their offensive snaps. That's up from 7% last year. “The biggest reason we’re going to do so well this year is this is something Matt is very comfortable with," WR Golden Tate said. "This is something he’s wanted, he’s thriving in this right now, he’s (balling), he’s comfortable." A quicker pace means more offensive plays and more fantasy opportunity for all the Lions.

Lions RB Ameer Abdullah on Saturday practiced without his red, "no contact" jersey for the 1st time since offseason shoulder surgery, according to ESPN's Michael Rothstein. Abdullah said he doesn't yet know whether he'll play in next Saturday's 3rd exhibition game, vs. Baltimore, after he missed the 1st 2. We'd like to see the 2nd-year back in some game action. But returning to full-contact practice at least marks a positive step.

Lions HC Jim Caldwell said RB Ameer Abdullah (shoulder) is "ready to go" for the start of training camp. He avoided the PUP list after undergoing surgery in January and missing spring workouts. With a healthy August, though, Abdullah will enter Week 1 as Detroit's lead back. He's a potential value at his 7th-round ADP -- 3 or 4 rounds later than he was going last summer.

Tim Twentyman of DetroitLions.com reports that the Lions will give RB Ameer Abdullah "every opportunity" to carry "most of the load" in the backfield this year. It's tough to know just how many carries "most of the load" will include in what has been the league's most pass-heavy offense for a while. But any such reports are encouraging after Abdullah's lackluster 2015 debut. He presents plenty of upside beyond his current late-Round 7 ADP in the middle of RB3 range.

Lions RB Ameer Abdullah had shoulder surgery in January to repair a torn labrum, according to the Detroit Free Press' Dave Birkett.  Abdullah reportedly suffered the injury in Week 15 but carried 18 times and caught 5 balls over the final 2 games.  His rehab is "ahead of schedule," per Birkett, but Abdullah might be sidelined until training camp.  It's not ideal for a guy coming off a somewhat disappointing rookie campaign, but it also shouldn't impact Abdullah's 2016 season, barring setbacks.

The Lions have signed RB Stevan Ridley.  Returning last year from a torn ACL, Ridley appeared in just 8 games and averaged 2.5 yards per carry.  He mustered just 3.6 YPC in 6 games back in 2014.  Ridley was productive in his first 3 NFL seasons, though, and is still only 27.  He figures to compete with Zach Zenner for the big-back role behind Ameer Abdullah.

The Lions have released RB Joique Bell, saving $2.5 million against the 2016 salary cap.  Bell turns 30 in August and averaged a career-worst 3.5 yards per carry this past season.  He won't draw much interest on the open market and isn't a good bet to be a fantasy asset this year.  Detroit moves forward with Ameer Abdullah, Theo Riddick and Zach Zenner in the backfield.  The 5'11, 222-pound Zenner might be the biggest winner from Bell's departure and will be a name to track this offseason.

Lions RB Theo Riddick will “likely” handle a bigger role next season, per beat writer Kyle Meinke. Riddick just led all RBs in receptions (80) and finished 2nd in receiving yards (697). So an increased role would likely come in the ground game, where he handled only 43 carries for 133 yards (3.1 YPC). We’ll see if Detroit retains Joique Bell and his $2.5 million base salary, but they’re a lock to search for O-line upgrades. The arrow is pointing up for Riddick entering year 4 – even with Ameer Abdullah set atop the depth chart.

Lions RB Ameer Abdullah (shoulder) is active for today’s game against the Bears. He’s tallied between 9 and 13 touches in 4 straight. That type of workload makes him just a RB3 or flex option.

Lions RB Ameer Abdullah (shoulder) is listed as questionable for Sunday's game against the Bears.  He put in 3 limited practices this week, though, and is expected to play.  The rookie has averaged just 8 carries over his last 3 games and is a shaky RB3.

New Lions OC Jim Bob Cooter told the Detroit Free Press that rookie RB Ameer Abdullah will see his role grow in the coming weeks. Cooter said that negative game flow for Detroit in the Week 8 loss to the Chiefs limited Abdullah's playing time. There remains fantasy upside to this rookie if his role actually does grow, and that makes Abdullah worth stashing in many leagues. But we wouldn't recommend actually using him until we see more touches actually occur in a game. The Lions face a soft Green Bay defense this week and will want to keep the Packers' offense of the field. That should make it a good time to try to get Abdullah going.
