The Vikings on Tuesday announced that LB Gerald Hodges will start in the middle Monday night against the Niners. Hodges enjoyed a nice preseason and has flashed good tackle potential in sparse previous starting chances. But Eric Kendricks replaced him in passing sub packages late in the preseason. That setup seems likely to continue, given Kendricks' skills in coverage. We'd still bet on the rookie taking over the starting gig before the end of the season. Hodges presents some tackle upside in the opener if you play in a particularly tackle-heavy format. But his likely 2-down role limits that scoring potential.

Vikings LB Eric Kendricks remained a backup in the 4th preseason game Saturday, so it's clear the team doesn't plan to open with him in the middle in base packages. LB Gerald Hodges played that role against the Cowboys. The rookie replaced him in the nickel package, however, before playing the full MLB role with the 2nd unit. Kendricks played well in both run defense and coverage in the game. It's disappointing that he won't start right away, but his role Saturday night provides some optimism that he could take over the job at some point this season. Kendricks still makes for a more interesting -- and higher-upside -- late stash in your IDP league than Hodges.

Vikings HC Mike Zimmer told the team website about LB Eric Kendricks, "I think he’s further ahead than most rookies." Zimmer then qualified his comments a bit, but it's clear that he's happy with how Kendricks is showing early. The rookie will have to tank this summer to lose the starting MLB job. Kendricks appears headed for a key role right away and some nice fantasy-scoring potential. Check our 2015 IDP rankings to see just how optimistic we are.

The Vikings somewhat surprisingly got LB Eric Kendricks well into Round 2 of the NFL Draft on Friday night. The most surprising part was that 2 other ILBs preceded him off the board. Many draft evaluators ranked Kendricks tops among inside guys. In Minnesota, he projects as the starting MLB and a 3-down player. Kendricks tallied 5 INTs and 10 sacks over his career, which says a bit about his versatility. Chad Greenway is getting older and hasn't been a terrific coverage LB. He could be looking at more 2-down duty going forward, which would chip away at his IDP value. Don't be surprised if Greenway checks in 3rd among Vikings LBs when our 2015 IDP rankings arrive.

The Vikings chose CB Trae Waynes 11th overall in the 2015 NFL Draft. Waynes played meekly in run support at Michigan State while producing lackluster tackle totals. He also tallied just 6 INTs over the past 2 years. That doesn't make him a bad pick for the Vikings, but it's tough to get excited about his IDP outlook. Waynes can only help the team D for fantasy football purposes, though.

Vikings S Robert Blanton is active for today's game at Miami after missing last week with knee and ankle trouble in the same leg. He's iffy from a durability standpoint which probably makes him not worth using for most IDP owners. But Blanton's a solid tackle bet when on the field. Use him if you're facing weak options otherwise.

After missing the past 2 games with a knee injury, Vikings LB Anthony Barr will have surgery to address the issue. HC Mike Zimmer called the procedure "very minor" on Friday, according to the Minneapolis Star Tribune, but he said the rookie won't play again this season. That should give Gerald Hodges a starting gig over the next 2 weeks, and he has delivered useful fantasy football numbers in limited starting opportunities this year. Barr finishes a terrific rookie season that sets him up as at least a perennial IDP starting candidate going forward -- with stud potential.

S Robert Blanton missed Sunday's loss to the Lions with a pair of injuries to his left leg, but he said he expects to play in Week 16 and might return to practice Wednesday. DE Brian Robison, who sprained his right ankle against Detroit, also said he expects to play at Miami this weekend. We'll keep an eye on their statuses throughout the week. Neither is a top-shelf IDP option, but each would carry matchup upside. HC Mike Zimmer declined Monday to give outlooks on LB Anthony Barr and DT Sharrif Floyd for the Dolphins game. Each guy missed the Detroit contest with a knee injury.

The Vikings on Friday ruled out LB Anthony Barr (knee), DT Sharrif Floyd (knee) and S Robert Blanton (knee/ankle) for Sunday's game at Detroit. That at least means that IDP owners won't need to decide whether to take a chance on any in their fantasy lineups. Barr's absence keeps Gerald Hodges in the lineup a week after he notched 9 tackles and 2 passes defensed -- including an INT he returned for a TD -- against the Jets. Hodges makes for a decent IDP option if you're searching. Andrew Sendejo will likely fill in for Blanton and has been a strong tackle producer in the past. He's certainly not a safe play in what would be his 1st start of the season, though, especially since we don't know exactly what his playing time would look like.

The Vikings might need to go without 3 defensive starters in Sunday's rematch with the Lions. LB Anthony Barr continues to miss practice time with the knee injury that cost him all of Week 14 and half of the previous game. S Robert Blanton got his left leg caught underneath a player in last Sunday's game, which forced him out with ankle and knee trouble. DT Sharrif Floyd continues to deal with a thigh bruise that kept him out for the 2nd half of each of the past 2 games. Floyd seems most likely of the 3 to play on Sunday, considering he has begun each of the past 2 games. All might need to put in a full Friday practice to make it into your Week 15 IDP considerations, though.

For the 2nd straight week, Vikings DT Sharrif Floyd spent the 2nd half on the sideline Sunday after aggravating his knee injury. Last time, however, he left a game his team was winning handily. This time, Floyd watched as his team needed an overtime TD to knock off the Jets. That makes this aggravation more worrisome for Floyd's outlook. IDP owners who have been using him will need to secure an insurance option this week. Minnesota also watched S Robert Blanton leave Sunday's game with a left leg injury. He's scheduled for an MRI.
