The Saints have placed LB Pete Werner on the non-football injury list. We haven't seen specifics on the injury, but John Sigler of Saints Wire reports that it's "minor." The 2nd-year LB has a shot at earning a full-time role but is not a lock for 3-down duty.
The Saints on Monday added LB Kwon Alexander to the COVID list. That leaves New Orleans' defense without its top 2 LBs, as Demario Davis landed on the list on Dec. 24. Rookie Pete Werner figures to be the playing time leader at the position against the Dolphins tonight in their absence.
The Saints on Tuesday designated DE Marcus Davenport (pectoral) and LB Kwon Alexander (elbow) to return from IR. That doesn't yet restore them to the active roster. The team will have this week and the next 2 to decide on that for each player. But the designation suggests the Saints believe each player is close to being ready. Davenport should work his way quickly back into the starting lineup upon his return. Alexnader, on the other hand, might have to watch rookie LB Pete Werner take his job. We'll see how that situation develops over the next few weeks.
