Falcons RB Damien Williams (ribs) didn't practice on Wednesday. If he's unable to play vs. the Rams this weekend, we'd expect RB Tyler Allgeier to be active -- but for RB Cordarrelle Patterson to dominate backfield work.

Falcons Swiss Army knife Cordarrelle Patterson racked up 22-120-1 on the ground in Sunday's narrow loss to the Saints, adding 3-16 receiving on 5 targets. Damien Williams' rib injury certainly didn't hurt. Rookie Tyler Allgeier was a healthy scratch, and Avery Williams claimed the only 2 other RB carries (beyond the 2 for Damien Williams). Atlanta would probably like to limit Patterson's touches more than that going forward -- especially on the ground. But the team might not have a choice until someone else in the backfield steps up.

Falcons RB Tyler Allgeier is a healthy scratch for today’s opener vs. the Saints. It’s only a minor surprise if you were paying attention to the preseason, when Allgeier was clearly behind RBs Cordarrelle Patterson and Damien Williams. The rookie is worth stashing in fantasy leagues of 12+ teams but probably won’t be a fantasy factor any time soon.

The Falcons rested RBs Cordarrelle Patterson and Damien Williams for Saturday night's preseason finale against the Titans. Rookie Tyler Allgeier opened in the backfield, with Qadree Allison and Caleb Huntley working in early. That usage makes it appear that Williams will enter the season ahead of Allgeier in line for carries. We'll see whether the rookie can work his way up. If he is 3rd at the moment, that would at least mark progress from how the preseason started. This looks like a backfield to avoid beyond Patterson for now.

Josh Kendall of The Athletic believe’s there’a “scenario in which RB Tyler Allgeier becomes Atlanta’s starting RB” in 2022. Kendall points out the rookie’s “physical style,” one that was unmistakable on tape. With hybrid Cordarrelle Patterson and Damien Williams as top competition, it certainly wouldn’t surprise us if Allgeier eventually sees starter-level work. We’ll be tracking all of the action closely as training camps begin to open league-wide.

BYU RB Tyler Allgeier went to the Falcons in Round 5 of the NFL Draft. Allgeier arrived at BYU as a non-scholarship player who spent time at both RB and LB. He eventually earned a scholarship, though, and topped 1,100 rushing yards each of his final 2 seasons. Allgeier reached workhorse status as a senior, delivering a 276-1,601-23 rushing line along with 28-199-0 receiving. He’s not especially speedy or athletic but brings a decent all-around package at 5’11 and 224 pounds. Although he dropped to Round 5, this is as strong a landing spot as Allgeier could have hoped for. He joins a Falcons RB room alongside Cordarrelle Patterson, Mike Davis, Damien Williams and Qadree Ollison. There’s a chance that Allgeier carves out a real role in 2022.
