The Chiefs released WR Marquez Valdes-Scantling. It was a no-brainer move, saving the team $12 million against the 2024 salary cap. MVS was a major bust in Kansas City, totaling just 1,002 receiving yards and three TDs across 33 regular-season games over the past two seasons. We'll see where the 29-year-old lands next, but he's a long shot for reliable fantasy value. Valdes-Scantling can be ignored in early best-ball drafts.
Marquez Valdes-Scantling a potential cap casualty?
Chiefs WR Marquez Valdes-Scantling has a year left on his contract, but that doesn't mean he's a lock to stay in K.C. this season. The Chiefs have decisions to make on extensions with other players, including DT Chris Jones and CB L'Jarius Sneed. If they need more cap space, MVS looks like a prime candidate to help. He's set to count nearly $14 million against the 2024 cap, whereas cutting the vet would leave just a $2 million dead-cap hit. Valdes-Scantling averaged a career-low 1.3 receptions per game in 2023, his second with the Chiefs. He also set a career low with 15.0 yards per catch and has scored just three TDs across two seasons. Frankly, we'll be a little surprised if Kansas City doesn't at least look to restructure MVS this offseason. You shouldn't be looking his way in best ball drafts right now anyway, so there's low potential fantasy impact to this situation.
Skyy Moore and Kadarius Toney available for Super Bowl
Chiefs WR Skyy Moore (knee) was a full participant in Wednesday's practice. WR Kadarius Toney was not listed on the injury report. So it looks like both guys will be available for Sunday's Super Bowl, although it remains unclear if either or both will be active. Neither guy has played since mid-December. Rashee Rice, Marquez Valdes-Scantling, and Justin Watson will likely to continue operating as Kansas City's top three WRs regardless.
Kadarius Toney questionable, Skyy Moore out for AFC Championship
Chiefs WR Kadarius Toney (hip) is listed as questionable for Sunday's AFC Championship vs. the Ravens. He went from a full practice on Wednesday to limited practices on Thursday and Friday. WR Skyy Moore (knee) has been ruled out. Rashee Rice, Justin Watson, Marquez Valdes-Scantling, and Mecole Hardman have been Kansas City's top four WRs in terms of pass routes in each of the Chiefs' two playoff games so far.
Rashee Rice & Kadarius Toney out for Week 18
Chiefs WRs Rashee Rice (hamstring) and Kadarius Toney (hip, ankle) are out for Sunday's game vs. the Chargers. Rice would presumably be playing if this game meant anything, but we'll track his status during next week's prep for the Wild Card Round. Kansas City will have WRs Justin Watson, Marquez Valdes-Scantling, Richie James, Mecole Hardman, and Justyn Ross available on Sunday.
