Beat writer Joe Buscagila of The Athletic believes the Bills “should” spend a “Day 2 or early Day 3 pick” on a RB. Buscagila points out that the current Bills staff has typically favored a 1-2 punch. Zack Moss took a step back after a promising rookie year. Devin Singletary, meanwhile, impressed with career highs in yards, TDs and receptions. He enters the offseason as Buffalo's clear lead back -- just note that he enters the final year of his rookie deal. GM Brandon Beane also spoke this offseason about adding more speed to the offense, and such a move could come in the form of a new RB. “I’m always looking for speed,” Beane said in January. “You’d love to have a (run after catch) guy that you can get the ball to and he can turn a five-yard pass into a 60-yard touchdown. We talked about speed here. You can never have enough of that. So we’ll continue to look for various ways.”
The Athletic’s Joe Buscaglia writes that the Bills’ coaching staff “remains firmly behind” RB Devin Singletary “as an important piece to the [backfield] puzzle.” Buscaglia expects Singletary to remain the “lead back by playing time” over late-Round 2 pick James Cook. The veteran likely cemented his role with a strong end to 2021, rushing 102 times for 430 yards and 8 scores over his final 6 games (playoffs included). However, Cook’s arrival does make Singletary a virtual lock to fall shy of his 40 catches from 2021. Current projections have him slated for only 25 catches.
Bills RB Devin Singletary got the start in Saturday's preseason finale and played all 12 snaps on the 1st possession. RB Zack Moss ended up leading the backfield with 16 snaps with QB Josh Allen, though. Singletary played 15 and RB Matt Breida 7. Breida, interestingly, played 6 of those 7 snaps in the slot or split out wide. This is looking like at least a 2-man, and potentially a 3-man committee heading into Week 1.
Bills RB Devin Singletary played all 10 snaps on the team’s 1st possession of Saturday's preseason game vs. the Bears. He ended up out-snapping RB Zack Moss 21 to 12 with what amounted to the 1st-team offense. Singletary took 2 carries for 21 yards, highlighted by this impressive TD. Moss finished with 4 carries for 21 yards. It’s possible that Buffalo wanted to limit Moss’ snaps after he missed a few days with a hamstring injury in mid-August. But it’s also possible that Singletary opens the season as the lead back. We've adjusted our projections for the Bills backfield.
Bills WR Cole Beasley, WR John Brown, RB Devin Singletary and TE Dawson Knox are all inactive for today’s game against the Jets. Don’t expect to see much of QB Josh Allen or RB Frank Gore. Top CB Tre’Davious White is also inactive for Buffalo.
Bills RB Devin Singletary (hamstring) practiced in full all week and isn’t listed on the final injury report. We’re expecting him to return to a change-of-pace role behind Frank Gore for now. But Sunday’s plum matchup vs. Miami puts Singletary in the RB3 discussion.
