49ers RB Elijah Mitchell has a hamstring strain and will miss about a week, per beat reporter David Lombardi. He’s already missed a couple of practices with the ailment. In a related move, San Francisco signed veteran RB Matt Breida on Tuesday. Breida managed just 2.7 yards per carry on 55 attempts for the Giants in 2023.
A healthy Mitchell projects as the Christian McCaffrey handcuff. (Note: CMC recently sustained a calf injury that'll cost him time.)
Mitchell's grip on the role isn't exactly firm, though.
His injury history includes shoulder, rib, hamstring, and knee injuries, among others. He's never played more than 11 games in a season.
San Francisco added RB Isaac Guerendo as a Round 4 pick, while Cody Schrader arrived as an undrafted free agent. Jordan Mason returns as a contender for backup snaps.
A new injury doesn't add any appeal to Mitchell's future free agent value. We'll see if the 49ers bring him back for cheap in 2025. But as of now, he's slated to hit free agency after the 2024 season.
