Lions GM Brad Holmes admitted Thursday that the team will consider trading RB David Montgomery this offseason. Montgomery has two years left on his current contract, with cap hits of $8.4 million in 2026 and $10.2 in 2027.
What They're Saying
Holmes on a potential Montgomery trade: "Those are conversations that we're going to have to have because got a lot of respect for that player. He deserves to be in a situation where his skill set can be utilized. And so yeah, would love it for it to be here, but if it can't be here, then you would have to just see what you can work out the best for him."
Fantasy Football Impact
Montgomery averaged just 9.3 carries and 42.1 rushing yards per game in 2025 -- easily his lowest marks among three seasons with the Lions -- as Jahmyr Gibbs took over as the team's clear lead back.
Montgomery will turn 29 in June but remained effective this past year. He averaged 4.5 yards per carry, ranked 11th among 51 qualifying RBs in rush yards over expected per attempt, and posted a career-best 3.17 yards after contact per attempt.
We'll see what kind of market is out there for Montgomery. It's possible that he lands in a spot that affords him more work than he got in Detroit last year.
Other Winners & Losers
Gibbs has already emerged as the Lions' backfield focal point, averaging 14.3 carries and 4.5 catches per game in 2025. Montgomery's departure would only help his volume upside, though.
Gibbs looks like a mid-first-round pick in 2026 fantasy football drafts.
