Emeka Egbuka Headshot

Buccaneers WR Emeka Egbuka may be in danger of missing the start of the regular season due to a sprained toe he suffered last week. HC Todd Bowles was asked about Egbuka’s Week 1 availability, and he wasn't sure at this time, labeling Egbuka day to day or week to week.

What They're Saying: Opener Status Remains Murky

Greg Auman, Fox Sports: “Not a lot of clarity on Emeka Egbuka's toe and how long he'll be sidelined. Bowles said he's ‘day to day, week to week.’ Asked if the injury could impact his availability for Week 1, in 27 days: ‘Not sure at this time.’

The initial reports on Egbuka’s sprained toe were positive news about him playing in the season opener, but that has gotten clouded now.

Toe injuries can be tricky for WRs because they can sap change-of-direction ability and route sharpness, two key parts of Egbuka’s game. The injury could also linger if he returns before he’s 100%.

The Buccaneers WR corps looks pretty thin right now. Jalen McMillan missed the first preseason game with a knee injury, and Chris Godwin also sat out, though that was likely just rest for the veteran.

Rookie WR Ted Hurst has benefited from more training camp reps and highlights, paving the way for a potential role if Egbuka (or any other WR) misses time.

We currently have Egbuka at WR20 in our PPR WR Rankings, but he could slide if it’s confirmed he’ll miss Week 1.
