Antonio Gibson's Season Is Done After Tearing his ACL

Tests today revealed that Patriots RB Antonio Gibson tore his ACL last night against the Buffalo Bills. Gibson was injured on a kick return in the second quarter and was ruled out quickly. Gibson’s absence will open up more opportunities in the backfield for rookie RB TreVeyon Henderson, who operated as the lead back Sunday night after the Gibson injury.

Antonio Gibson Out With Knee Injury

Patriots RB Antonio Gibson injured his right knee on a kick return in the second quarter of Sunday night's game against the Bills. He was down for a while in obvious pain and was ruled out a short time later. This has the look of a serious injury. Gibson has been part of New England's 3-RB rotation this season, averaging 4.8 carries and 0.5 targets over the first four games. His absence should turn this into a 2-man backfield with Rhamondre Stevenson and TreVeyon Henderson.

No Role Change for TreVeyon Henderson in Week 2

Week 1 turned up just a 35% snap share for Patriots rookie RB TreVeyon Henderson. That number shrank slightly to 32% in the Pats’ narrow Week 2 win in Miami. Henderson finished fourth on the team in carries with 5, while he ranked second among New England RBs in targets. He caught both for 30 yards.

Was This a Bad Signal for D'Andre Swift's 2025 Outlook?

The first episode of the Patriots' "Forged in Foxborough" web series revealed that the team had multiple offers for the 38th overall pick in the draft. Instead of moving, though, New England stayed and selected Ohio State RB TreVeyon Henderson. The offers:

        • Pick 39 plus a seventh-rounder from Chicago
        • Picks 58 and 79 plus a 2026 third-rounder "possibly from Houston"

Josh McDaniels Back As Patriots OC

The Patriots are expected to hire Josh McDaniels as OC under new HC Mike Vrabel, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. It's a homecoming for McDaniels, who had two previous stints with New England. He ran the offense from 2006 to 2008 and then again from 2012 to 2021. The Patriots ranked top eight in points in 12 of McDaniels' 13 seasons and top 11 in yards in 10 of 13. Of course, the majority of those offenses were quarterbacked by Tom Brady. In three years without Brady, McDaniels' Patriots finished eighth, 27th, and sixth in points; fifth, 27th, and 15th in yards. McDaniels also spent two seasons as Broncos HC (2009-2010), one as Rams OC (2011), and two as Raiders HC (2022-2023). None of those teams ranked better than 12th in yards or points. McDaniels has shown the ability to morph his offense to fit the personnel, with eight top-10 finishes in rushing yards and 10 top-10 finishes in passing yards. He's not as exciting for QB Drake Maye and this Patriots offense as Ben Johnson or even Liam Coen would have been. But McDaniels is at least a known commodity and should bring some stability to this offense in 2025. We'll see what the team does this offseason to upgrade the offensive line and skill positions.

Rhamondre Stevenson Questionable, Expects To Play Week 7

Patriots RB Rhamondre Stevenson (foot) is listed as questionable for this weekend’s game vs. the Jaguars in London. He was a full participant in Friday’s practice and said that he expects to play. We’ll get New England’s inactives around 8 am ET on Sunday. Assuming Stevenson is active, he should slide back in as the Patriots’ lead back.

        Rhamondre Stevenson Still Out Thursday

Patriots RB Rhamondre Stevenson (foot) remained sidelined for Thursday's practice. He now seems unlikely to play vs. the Jaguars in London on Sunday morning. With Stevenson out last week, RB Antonio Gibson led New England's backfield with a 51% snap rate, 13 of 21 RB carries, and four targets. He busted with just 43 scoreless yards in that one, but the workload projection at least makes him a RB3 or Flex option in Week 7 fantasy lineups.

        Rhamondre Stevenson Out Wednesday

Patriots RB Rhamondre Stevenson (foot) remained sidelined for Wednesday's practice. HC Jerod Mayo said last week that Stevenson isn't dealing with a long-term injury, but he's certainly not a lock to be available for Sunday morning's game vs. the Jaguars in London. With Stevenson out last week, RB Antonio Gibson handled 13 carries and four targets but mustered just 43 total yards.

        Antonio Gibson Disappoints as Starter

Patriots RB Antonio Gibson did not perform as the starter replacing RB Rhamondre Stevenson. Gibson rushed the ball 13 times for 19 yards. He caught three passes for 24 yards as well. Stevenson may be back for the Patriots next game.

Rhamondre Stevenson OUT For Week 6

Patriots RB Rhamondre Stevenson (foot) is out for Sunday’s game vs. the Texans. HC Jerod Mayo said Friday that Stevenson isn’t dealing with a long-term injury, so we’ll see if he can make it back for Week 7. His absence this weekend should leave Antonio Gibson as New England’s clear lead back. He’s been good as the No. 2 this year, averaging 5.9 yards per carry and 10.8 yards per catch. Gibson gets a Houston defense ranked ninth in adjusted fantasy points allowed to RBs – and his team is implied for just 15.5 points. But he shapes up as a volume-based RB2 in fantasy lineups.

        Rhamondre Stevenson Out Again Thursday

Patriots RB Rhamondre Stevenson (foot) missed his second straight practice on Thursday. He's seemingly in real danger of missing this weekend's game vs. the Texans, which would leave Antonio Gibson as New England's feature back. Check back tomorrow for another update on Stevenson.

        Rhamondre Stevenson Sidelined Wednesday

Patriots RB Rhamondre Stevenson missed Wednesday's practice with a foot injury. He got banged up late in last week's loss to the Dolphins but said afterward that he expected to be fine for Week 6. We'll see if he gets back on the field tomorrow. Stevenson's absence against the Texans this weekend would mean a heavy workload for RB Antonio Gibson.

Rhamondre Stevenson Won't Start Week 5

Patriots HC Jerod Mayo said Friday that RB Rhamondre Stevenson will not start this weekend's game vs. the Dolphins. That honor will presumably go to RB Antonio Gibson. Stevenson has fumbled once in all four of New England's games so far this season.
