Chiefs RB LeSean McCoy (ankle) returned to a limited practice on Thursday. RB Damien Williams (knee) remained sidelined. We're assuming Williams won't play against the Ravens this weekend, while McCoy seems 50/50. Check back tomorrow for another update.

Chiefs RBs Damien Williams (knee) and LeSean McCoy (ankle) were sidelined on Wednesday. Neither guy's injury is serious -- but they're both in danger of missing this weekend's showdown with the Ravens. That'd leave Kansas City's backfield to Darwin Thompson and Darrell Williams. Thompson would be an exciting fantasy play after an impressive preseason.

NFL Network's Tom Pelissero reports that the MRI on the injured ankle of Chiefs RB LeSean McCoy showed no significant damage and that "he has a shot to play" Sunday against the Ravens. That's a lot different than "expected to play." We'll see about the outlook for Damien Williams' knee, but RB Darwin Thompson makes for an attractive waiver target this week.

Chiefs RB LeSean McCoy sustained an ankle injury late in Sunday's win over the Raiders. It's not clear yet how significant the issue is. McCoy's last touch came inside the final 3 minutes, and K.C. ran the ball just 1 more time after that. Darwin Thompson took that final handoff and would likely be the backfield leader should McCoy and Damien Williams (knee) sit in Week 3. We'll be watching this whole situation closely. Thompson looks like 1 of the week's top fantasy football waiver targets, though, even if McCoy and Williams appear on track to play against Baltimore on Sunday.

Update: NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports that McCoy will have an MRI Monday, adding, "At first glance, it doesn't appear to be major."

Chiefs RB Damien Williams injured his knee in the 4th quarter of Sunday's game against the Raiders. He's officially questionable to return. Williams' absence leaves LeSean McCoy atop the depth chart and Darwin Thompson as the #2 RB.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reports that RB LeSean McCoy has reached a 1-year deal with the Chiefs that includes $3 million guaranteed. McCoy's arrival shouldn't threaten the season-opening role of Damien Williams, whom coaches have said will be their lead back. But he's getting nearly double the guaranteed money in the 2-year contract ($1.6 million) that Williams signed with the Chiefs in December. McCoy also muddles the outlook for rookie Darwin Thompson who had climbed into the single-digit rounds of fantasy football drafts. McCoy, of course, played his first 4 seasons under HC Andy Reid in Philadelphia before spending 2 with Chip Kelly and then the past 4 in Buffalo. McCoy is now coming off the worst production of his career, though, and can't be counted on for big numbers even in the explosive K.C. offense. We'll all be watching to see how this backfield sorts out over the next couple of weeks. McCoy and Thompson both belong in the early double-digit rounds for now. Williams remains overpriced at his ADP.

Chiefs RB Darwin Thompson split 1st-team goal-line reps with RB Damien Williams in Tuesday's practice, according to ESPN's Adam Teicher. RB coach Deland McCullough said afterward that it was a direct result of Thompson's impressive showing in the preseason opener, when he carried 5 times for 22 yards and scored a 29-yard receiving TD. “He’s a strong runner," McCullough said. “He’s got a great center of gravity. He’s a guy that can get skinny and get up through some holes, too. More importantly, he’s done some things to warrant that opportunity to get some reps with the (starters). He showed some flashes in the last game." We'll be watching to see if Thompson gets any work with the starters in Kansas City's 2nd exhibition. But his talent and situation make the rookie an intriguing late-round flier in fantasy drafts.

Chiefs RB Damien Williams returned to practice on Wednesday. He ended up missing 8 days with his hamstring injury. RBs Carlos Hyde, Darwin Thompson and Darrell Henderson reportedly flashed in Williams' absence, but RBs coach Eric Bieniemy reiterated on Sunday that Williams is "obviously" the starter. We'll see if he can stay healthy over the next month leading up to Week 1.

Chiefs RB Damien Williams remains sidelined with the hamstring injury he suffered on July 28. "He’s missed quite a bit," HC Andy Reid said Saturday. “He’s missed a lot of plays. It’s been great for these other guys. (Carlos Hyde) has done a nice job. He’s got a lot of reps and he’s taking advantage of them." We've heard nothing to suggest that Williams is in danger of missing the start of the season. But the missed practice time is worrisome for a guy who's never spent an NFL season as a lead back. We were already off Williams at his 2nd-round ADP. The hamstring issue has done nothing to change that.

Chiefs RB Damien Williams left Sunday’s practice early because of a hamstring issue, according to Brooke Pryor of the Kansas City Star. We’ll see how significant the injury is

"Damien Williams is our starter. We expect him to excel in that role." That's what Chiefs OC Eric Bienemy said Thursday, according to Brandon Kiley of 610 Sports in Kansas City. It's not a shocking revelation, but it does add some clarity to a backfield that added Carlos Hyde early this offseason for basically the same annual salary as the team is paying Williams. We're tempering our expectations a bit for Williams, who has never topped 50 carries or 23 catches through 5 NFL seasons (after arriving as an undrafted free agent). But his tremendous finish to 2018 and the numbers Kareem Hunt delivered over the previous year and a half point to the high ceiling that comes with his new job. Hyde, meanwhile, looks like more of a handcuff for fantasy purposes than a weekly flex candidate.

The Chiefs signed RB Carlos Hyde to a 1-year, $2.8 million deal. He was unemployed for just about 24 hours after getting dumped by the Jaguars. Hyde is still just 28 but has struggled to 3.9 and 3.3 yards per carry over the past 2 seasons. He ranked 33rd last year among 47 qualifying RBs in Pro Football Focus' Elusive Rating, which measures a runner's impact beyond the blocking he receivers. Hyde joins a Chiefs backfield with Damien Williams, who inked a 2-year, $5.1 million deal in December. Both Hyde and Williams got $1.6 million guaranteed. They'll duke it out for carries this summer.

Chiefs RB Spencer Ware (hamstring) is not listed on the final injury report after putting in full practices on Thursday and Friday. So he'll presumably be active for Sunday's AFC Championship against the Patriots. Ware was atop Kansas City's depth chart prior to the injury but figures to return as Damien Williams' backup. It's unclear exactly how much work Ware will siphon.

3:01pm EST 1/12/19

Chiefs RB Spencer Ware (hamstring) is inactive for today's game against the Colts. That again leaves Damien Williams as the clear lead back. He averaged 11.3 carries and 4.7 targets per game over the last 3 and should be looking at a similar workload today.

Chiefs RB Spencer Ware (hamstring) is listed as questionable for Saturday's game against the Colts. He was limited in practice all week -- notable after Ware was a full-go in practice before sitting out the regular-season finale. We'll see if Ware is up when inactives come out around 3 pm ET on Saturday. Even if he is, though, we're expecting Damien Williams to serve as Kansas City's lead back.

2:12pm EST 12/30/18

Chiefs RB Spencer Ware (hamstring) is inactive for today's game against the Raiders. It’s a surprise after he put in a full week of practice. Ware’s absence makes Damien Williams a RB1 in fantasy lineups.

Chiefs RB Spencer Ware (hamstring) is listed as questionable for Sunday's game against the Raiders. He should play after putting in a full week of practice, but we’re expecting him to be in a committee backfield alongside Damien Williams. Williams is the safer fantasy bet.

The Chiefs and RB Damien Williams have agreed to a 2-year extension worth up to $8.1 million, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. He's now signed with Kansas City through the 2020 campaign. Williams has stepped up for 263 yards and 3 scores over the past 2 weeks, averaging 6.6 yards per carry and 8.5 yards per catch. He should remain a big part of the offense the rest of this season, even with the return of RB Spencer Ware. We'll see what the Chiefs add to the backfield this offseason.
