The Athletic's Matt Barrows expects RB Tevin Coleman to remain the 49ers starter this season. "[HC] Kyle Shanahan and [RBs coach] Bobby Turner liked starting games with Coleman because he’s a little bigger and more physical runner than the others," Barrows writes. "So my guess is that the arrangement will be the same as last season: Coleman starts, with Turner then using his feel for who’s hot that day dictating the snap loads for the rest of the game." Who gets the 1st snap in San Francisco's backfield is hardly relevant. But the takeaway here is that this remains a committee attack with Coleman, Raheem Mostert and potentially Jerick McKinnon. We're shying away from Mostert at his RB26 ADP. Coleman is a better value at RB38.

The 49ers and RB Raheem Mostert have agreed to a restructured contract. No additional years were tacked on to the deal, but Mostert reportedly has a shot to double his old salary via incentives. He had requested a trade back earlier this month but will now be back in San Francisco this season. Mostert heads to training camp as the favorite for lead duties in this backfield -- although Tevin Coleman, and potentially Jerick McKinnon, will also be involved.

A trade shouldn't hurt his value, since it would presumably involve a team seeking to leverage his talent. Tevin Coleman, meanwhile, gets at least a slight upside boost on the chance that Mostert does get moved. Coleman's RB4-level ADP already makes him a solid value. Jerick McKinnon also remains under contract with the 49ers and would gain opportunity upside if Mostert moves.

NBC Sports' Matt Maiocco believes Jerick McKinnon is in line to be the 49ers' passing-down back in 2020. "McKinnon gives the 49ers something they previously lacked: A legitimate route-runner and third-down option out of the backfield," Maiocco writes. "If he’s healthy, McKinnon will have a spot on the team." Injuries have prevented McKinnon from playing a single game for the 49ers since they signed him ahead of the 2018 campaign. But San Francisco restructured his deal this offseason and evidently still has plans for him. McKinnon caught 94 balls over his final 2 seasons in Minnesota. Maiocco adds that Matt Breida is the 49ers RB most likely to be off the roster come Week 1.

It's unclear if McKinnon has a shot to play the 2nd half of the season as a designated-to-return player. Rapoport hears that McKinnon might have had another procedure on that troublesome knee. We'll keep an eye on him, but McKinnon isn't worth stashing in fantasy leagues that don't have an IR spot. RBs Tevin Coleman (5.09) and Matt Breida (8.02) are both worth considering at ADP.

49ers GM John Lynch suggested in a Wednesday radio interview that RB Jerick McKinnon suffered another setback in his return from last year's torn ACL. "It’s a real bummer," Lynch said. "He keeps getting to the final step. We did it a month ago and he kinda regressed and yesterday we had a similar situation." McKinnon is basically a full year removed from his injury and still can't string together multiple practices without trouble. He won't be an early-season fantasy factor and, at this point, is only worth rostering in the deepest of redraft leagues.

That'd obviously be great news for a player who opened training camp on the PUP and then suffered a setback in his repaired knee shortly after returning. McKinnon will need to prove his knee can hold up this time before he's worth much fantasy football draft attention. We'd still much rather take Matt Breida. Tevin Coleman is OK at cost.

Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area reports that 49ers RB Jerick McKinnon's right knee "was not feeling good after working the past 2 days" and that "he'll be shut down for a while." That doesn't sound good for a guy who missed the whole set of offseason workouts and the start of camp in his return from last year's ACL tear. McKinnon figures to at least open the season behind Tevin Coleman and Matt Breida. He might also be in danger of starting the year on IR. (San Francisco can't put him on the regular-season PUP after activating him from the camp PUP this week.) McKinnon's situation has produced some movement in our RB rankings.

Update: HC Kyle Shanahan said after Thursday's practice that McKinnon will receive a platelet rich plasma injection in his troublesome knee and "could" be back in 2 weeks. The goal, Shanny said, is for McKinnon to be ready for Week 1. We'll see.
