The Patriots "suspect" WR Julian Edelman suffered a torn ACL in Friday night's preseason game against the Lions, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter. "But do not definitely know," Schefter adds. "MRI on Sunday to determine full extent of injury." These "he-probably-tore-his-ACL" reports usually turn out to be torn ACLs. If that's the case, Edelman will miss the entire 2017 season. That'd open up a boatload of targets in 1 of the top passing games in the NFL. WR Chris Hogan would stand as the most likely beneficiary. WR Danny Amendola would also see a big boost in snaps. And WR Brandin Cooks, TE Rob Gronkowski and RB James White would pick up some extra targets.
Patriots WR Julian Edelman suffered a leg injury in the 1st half of Friday night's preseason game against the Lions. According to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, Edelman "limped off grabbing the back of his knee." He was eventually carted to the locker room. We'll update his status when we learn more. WR Chris Hogan would appear to be the biggest beneficiary of Edelman's absence. He's already caught 4 balls for 70 yards and 2 TDs tonight.
Update: The Associated Press reports the injury is to Edelman's right knee.
The Patriots have acquired WR Brandin Cooks from the Saints, sending a 1st- and a 3rd-round pick and getting back a 4th-rounder. Cooks caught 162 passes over the past 2 seasons, topping 1,100 yards in each campaign and scoring 17 TDs over that span. He finished among the top 13 WRs across fantasy formats in each of those seasons. The Pats control his rights for the next 2 years, including a team option for 2018. Cooks lands in 1 of the few offenses that approximates the efficiency of New Orleans and figures to quickly challenge Julian Edelman for the team target lead. His fantasy outlook doesn't change drastically from what it's been with the Saints. Other WRs in New England will have more trouble finding regular opportunities. Back in New Orleans, Michael Thomas should grab a larger share of targets, while Willie Snead stands to gain if the team doesn't add anything more than Ted Ginn to the corps this offseason.
Patriots WR Malcolm Mitchell (knee) didn’t practice all week and is listed as doubtful for Sunday’s game against the Dolphins. He tweaked the knee last week that he’s had 3 surgeries on. His status for the postseason is unclear. Mitchell’s absence will leave Julian Edelman, Chris Hogan and Michael Floyd as New England’s top 3 WRs.
The forecast for today's Jets-Patriots game calls for a 95% chance of rain with winds around 10 mph. That wind isn't a major concern, but it looks like this will be a sloppy game. We still don't expect the Pats to have any trouble when they take to the air, but the weather could push them further toward the run if (when?) they get out to a big lead.
Patriots WR Chris Hogan (back) is out for Sunday’s game against the 49ers. He played through the issue last week but either suffered a setback or is just getting this easily winnable game off. Hogan’s absence leaves Julian Edelman, Danny Amendola and Malcolm Mitchell as New England’s top 3 WRs.
Patriots WR Julian Edelman (foot) is active for today’s game against the Browns. He was added to the injury report on Thursday but was able to get in a limited practice on Friday. Edelman is safe to get into fantasy lineups in a plus matchup and with QB Tom Brady back in action.
Patriots WR Julian Edelman (foot) is expected to play against the Browns today, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. Edelman popped up on Thursday's injury report but got in a limited practice on Friday. We never heard any concern about the foot. He's a borderline WR1 in PPR and a strong WR2 in non-PPR with QB Tom Brady back.
Patriots WR Julian Edelman (foot) is listed as questionable for this weekend’s game against the Bills. He was added to the injury report on Thursday but was able to get in a limited practice on Friday. We’re guessing Edelman will play, but we’ll find out for sure by noon ET on Sunday.
Patriots WR Julian Edelman was added to Thursday's injury report with a foot. He was limited in practice. We won't hear anything from the team on his status, so we'll have to see what he does in practice on Friday. Edelman, of course, has had 2 foot surgeries over the past year.
Patriots QB Jimmy Garoppolo (shoulder) is inactive, as expected, for tonight's game against the Texans. 3rd-round rookie QB Jacoby Brissett gets the start. Julian Edelman is New England's backup QB. Seriously.
NFL Network's Courtney Fallon reports that Patriots TE Rob Gronkowski (hamstring) will not play against the Cardinals on Sunday night. It's a bit surprising after Gronk was able to get in 3 limited practices this week, but his outlook got decidedly more grim when he wasn't on the team flight to Arizona. His absence is another massive blow to an offense already without QB Tom Brady. TE Martellus Bennett gets the biggest boost up the Week 1 Rankings sans Gronk. WRs Julian Edelman and Chris Hogan and RB James White could also see a few extra targets.
Update: Gronkowski has officially been ruled out for Week 1.
Patriots WR Julian Edelman was on the practice field on Wednesday. It's unclear whether he was limited, but yesterday's issue with his twice surgically repaired foot obviously isn't a major concern. Edelman remains a big injury risk but is a good bet for at least WR2 PPR production when on the field.
Patriots WR Julian Edelman was injured during a 1-on-1 drill in Tuesday's joint practice with the Saints. The injury appeared to be to his left foot, which he had 2 surgeries on over the past 9 months. Tuesday was Edelman's 2nd practice since being activated from the PUP list. NFL Network's Ian Rapoport hears that the injury is not believed to be serious based on "initial exams." We'll continue looking for updates on Edelman's status. He checks in as the 6th biggest injury risk among WRs.
Patriots WR Julian Edelman (foot) was activated from the PUP list and made his practice debut on Sunday. He sat out the scrimmage, so he's not quite a full-go yet. But he's clearly on track to be there ahead of Week 1. Edelman has missed 9 games over the past 2 seasons and is 1 of the biggest injury risks at WR. But he's also ranked among the top 18 in PPR points per game in 3 straight years. Edelman is a risk/reward pick at his early 4th-round ADP.
Patriots WR Julian Edelman (foot) was spotted running routes off to the side of practice on Thursday. "He was moving at a good clip," observed insider Tom Curran. Edelman remains on the PUP list after April foot surgery, but it sounds like he's not far off from being cleared to practice. He's going in the early 4th round of recent MFL10 drafts.
