The Patriots have ruled WR Julian Edelman out for Sunday's game because of a concussion. Edelman took part in limited practices this week but obviously has yet to gain clearance for full contact. His absence leaves targets on the field for TE Rob Gronkowski, WR Brandon LaFell, RB Shane Vereen and TE Tim Wright. Vereen and Wright could be the biggest beneficiaries in a very favorable passing matchup. Vereen could be a sneakier PPR value now, though Wright remains only a fringe option in deeper leagues (or a lottery-ticket type of play). We're adjusting our Week 16 rankings to reflect Edelman's absence, but we're no less confident in QB Tom Brady's outlook.

The Patriots signed WR Brandon LaFell to a 3-year contract.  A 2010 3^rd round pick of Carolina, LaFell never blossomed into a reliable starter.  In 2013, he managed just 49 catches, 627 yards and 5 TDs despite playing with an improved Cam Newton.  His role in New England is unclear, especially after the recent re-signing of Julian Edelman.  LaFell’s always excelled as a blocker, though.  This move will likely turn out better in real life than in fantasy.

Patriots WR Julian Edelman re-signed with the Patriots on Saturday.  It's the move we all expected all along, though lagging negotiations made a little slower than anticipated.  Edelman turned into a PPR demon last year in a pass offense that sorely needed him.  Look for a downturn in production, potentially a big one as New England's young wideouts grow up and TE Rob Gronkowski returns from injury.  Edelman did enough to earn a WR3 spot in initial 2014 fantasy football rankings, though.  His consistent presence can only help QB Tom Brady.

Pats insider Nick Underhill passes along word that WR Danny Amendola (groin) won’t undergo surgery.  The 28-year-old was widely expected to go under the knife, but it’s believed that the injury can heal with rest.  Amendola severely underperformed in his 1^st year in New England, posting a 54-633-2 line across 12 games.  After the season, both Amendola and Tom Brady admitted that they lacked chemistry.  Of course, the health of the injury-prone WR is key to changing that moving forward.  Amendola will remain on the fantasy radar next season -- especially if the Pats lose unrestricted free agent Julian Edelman. 

Not surprisingly, Patriots QB Tom Brady is a big fan of WR Julian Edelman.  "He had an incredible season," Brady said of Edelman on Monday morning. "No one could have ever predicted what he could accomplish for our team. I mean, he was one guy that was so consistent and dependable for us."  Edelman led New England in targets (151), catches (105), yards (1,056) and TDs (6) in the regular season and made another 16 grabs in 2 playoff games.  Brady's words are important since Edelman is set to hit the free-agent market this offseason.  Brady and the Pats would obviously love to have Edelman back in 2014, but we'll see how much money they're able to offer him after handing Danny Amendola a 5-year, $28.5 million deal last offseason.  A return to New England would be best for Edelman's fantasy value.

The forecast for tonight's Colts-Patriots game calls for 22 mph winds and a 100% chance of rain.  Look for a run-heavy attack from New England, with short passes when they take to the air.  The conditions aren't ideal for Indy's vertical passing attack.  Downgrade QB Andrew Luck and WR T.Y. Hilton.

The forecast for today's Patriots-Ravens game calls for a 50% chance of rain and thunderstorms with winds at 10-12 mph.  That figures to make deep passing more difficult, which is bad news for WR Torrey Smith.  New England's short passing game should be fine.

Patriots WR Julian Edelman had a huge Week 15 outing against the Dolphins, racking up 19 targets, 13 catches, 139 yards and a score.  That was 35% of the team's total targets, 38% of the catches and 38% of the yards.  Edelman's 24-yard score came when he took a short pass, slipped a few tackles and dove into the end zone.  He's been a PPR monster the past 4 weeks, tallying a whopping 37 catches.  He's also amassed 414 yards and 4 scores over that span, making him an elite option across fantasy formats.  Edelman will be a must-start against a mediocre Ravens pass defense in Week 16.

Patriots WR Kenbrell Thompkins (hip) is inactive for today’s game against the Browns. WR Aaron Dobson (foot) is also out.  That leaves Julian Edelman and Danny Amendola as New England’s clear top-2 WRs.

ESPN's Ed Werder and NFL Network's Albert Breer are reporting that Patriots TE Rob Gronkowski (forearm) is now not expected to play against the Saints on Sunday.  Gronk was hoping to gain medical clearance this week, but it sounds like that didn't happen.  It's the forearm, rather than the back, that's keeping him sidelined.  Gronkowski will now aim toward Week 7's game against the Jets.  New England isn't off until Week 10. WRs Danny Amendola, Kenbrell Thompkins and Julian Edelman will be QB Tom Brady's top 3 targets against the Saints.

Patriots insider Karen Guregian hears that WR Danny Amendola (groin) is "not likely" to play against the Falcons on Sunday night.  Guregian adds that he hasn't "completely" been ruled out but has a "better shot" to return Week 5.  Amendola remains worth hanging on to in fantasy leagues.  Meanwhile, Julian Edelman will likely get at least 1 more game as New England's slot receiver.
