The 49ers on Tuesday deemed DE Nick Bosa "week-to-week" with a muscle strain in his upper right leg. HC Kyle Shanahan said Bosa was preparing to play through it before an MRI revealed the strain. It doesn't seem like an issue that should threaten Bosa's start to the regular season, though we'll keep an eye on his situation. Bosa missed most of August last season with a hamstring injury, which sounds like the area holding him back now as well. That -- plus a September ankle sprain -- didn't stop him from registering an impressive rookie. DE Dee Ford is also out with a calf "irritation," but the team lists him as merely "day-to-day."

HC Kyle Shanahan says that he expects LB Kwon Alexander to start on the weak side this year, next to Fred Warner and ahead of Dre Greenlaw. “We compete all the time, so no one just has a job set in stone, but I don't see that as open competition right now,” Shanahan said after Saturday's practice, according to NBC Sports' Matt Maiocco. “We brought Kwon here for a reason. He did exactly what we wanted when he was out there and did even more than we anticipated from a leadership standpoint. Kwon has been great here.” Alexander signed a big free-agent contract last offseason coming off an ACL tear and then tore a pectoral muscle in Week 9 of last year. That allowed Greenlaw to step into a starting role and perform well, including the signature stop of Seahawks TE Jacob Hollister that clinched the NFC West title and homefield advantage for the 49ers. This season, though, Greenlaw will need another injury to Alexander or Warner if he's to see enough snaps to be an IDP factor.

After moving down a spot in a trade with the Buccaneers, the 49ers spent the 14th pick of the NFL Draft on South Carolina DT Javon Kinlaw. The former Gamecock totaled 10 sacks over the past 2 years but never reached 10 tackles for loss in a college season. Analysts cited inconsistent game tape. He lands in 1 of the league's best defenses, which should help hide deficiencies. We're not excited about Kinlaw's IDP upside, though.

The 49ers on Monday announced a 5-year, $85 million extension for DE Arik Armstead, keeping him from hitting free agency. Armstead started his career a bit slowly, including missing 18 games across 2016-17. But he broke out with 10 sacks and 18 QB hits in his 5th season and won't turn 27 until mid-November. Expect Armstead to land in DL2 territory in our 2020 IDP rankings.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports that the 49ers have agreed to a 3-year, $28.5 million deal with S Jimmie Ward. The 28-year-old -- until mid-July -- is coming off the healthiest and strongest season among his 1st 6 in the league. In addition to staying on the field, Ward also settled in to a higher percentage of safety snaps than he played in 2018. Ward combines that role with some valuable slot-corner exposure to present IDP upside beyond last year's mediocre production.

The 49ers on Friday activated LB Kwon Alexander (pectoral) from IR. He is expected to play today against the Vikings. NBC Sports Bay Area reports that Alexander's fill-in, rookie Dre Greenlaw, will continue to play a key role. It's not yet clear which guy will start and how much each will play. Fred Warner looks like the only San Francisco ILB who should be in your IDP lineups if you're setting those today. With Alexander back and DE Dee Ford potentially back (he's questionable after missing basically the past 6 games), the Niners' defense on whole could be at its strongest in weeks.

A Monday MRI revealed a Grade 2 strain to the right hamstring of 49ers CB Richard Sherman, NFL Network's Tom Pelissero reports. That puts Sherman in doubt for Sunday's game against the Falcons and perhaps beyond. We'll see how he progresses, but make sure you have another option for the CB slot in your IDP lineup.

Niners DE Dee Ford left Sunday's win over the Cardinals in the 2nd quarter with a hamstring injury. We'll see about his status heading into Sunday night's clash with the Packers. Ford has been up and down while dealing with various lower-body injuries all season, though. He's not much of an IDP factor this year.

He made it onto the field for just 1 limited practice this week while dealing with a quad injury and has been hampered by multiple issues all season. S Jimmie Ward is also active for the 1st time this season. We'll see whether he takes the FS job back from Tarvarius Moore.

Ford, in particular, has been struggling through his return from a preseason knee sprain and should not be in fantasy football lineups. DB Jimmie Ward, meanwhile, is inactive once again. That keeps Tarvarius Moore in play for deep IDP leagues.

Ford missed Wednesday's and Thursday's practices before a limited Friday. He's listed with a quad injury but has been struggling to get over a preseason knee injury. He's a definite sit for IDP owners even if active. We'll check the status of all 3 Sunday afternoon, but the late start combined with their situations means you should try to look elsewhere for fantasy options.

Niners DE Nick Bosa (ankle) is active for today's game against the Bengals. He had some soreness in his previously sprained ankle coming out of Week 1 and got some rest from practice during the week. But Bosa also graded out tops among all edge players in Pro Football Focus' pass-rushing productivity in Week 1. He's worth the risk against a Bengals offense that looks weak in pass protection.

Niners rookie DE Nick Bosa is questionable for Sunday's game at Cincinnati. Bosa came away from Week 1 with some soreness in his previously sprained ankle, GM John Lynch said during a radio interview Friday. Bosa sat out Wednesday's and Thursday's practices before returning to limited participation Friday. Lynch said Bosa was progressing well. We'll see if he's ready to go. There will be some re-injury risk even if he plays but also enticing sack upside.

Niners LB Kwon Alexander got kicked out in the 1st half of Sunday's game against the Buccaneers after delivering a blow to the head of QB Jameis Winston, a former teammate. We'll see if the incident affects Alexander's availability for Week 2.
