The Bears' first "unofficial" depth chart lists rookie RB Roschon Johnson third. He unsurprisingly trails incumbent Khalil Herbert and veteran free-agent pickup D'Onta Foreman. Reports have had both working ahead of Johnson in training camp. An earlier version of the depth chart also had Johnson behind Trestan Ebner and Travis Homer, but Chicago corrected that. These early depth charts can often prove to hold no value, and Johnson will need to work past at least one veteran to find 2023 fantasy relevance. But he's in a decent spot considering the limited career production of Herbert and Foreman. None of the Bears' backs cracks the top 36 in our RB rankings.

The Bears signed RB D'Onta Foreman to a 1-year, $3 million deal. Foreman is coming off a nice season in Carolina, posting a career-high 914 rushing yards on 4.5 yards per carry. He ranked 26th among 42 qualifiers in Pro Football Focus' rushing grades and 21st in Elusive Rating. New backfield mate Khalil Herbert beat Foreman in both metrics, finishing 25th and 6th. We'll consider Herbert the favorite to lead Chicago's David Montgomery-less backfield in carries for now but will keep a close eye on the backfield all offseason. It's worth noting that neither Herbert nor Foreman have much pass-catching production on their resumes. The Bears also have change-of-pace types Travis Homer and Trestan Ebner on the RB depth chart. There's a chance this is a 3-man committee backfield in 2023.

Bears RB David Montgomery matched a season-high with 17 carries in a Week 11 loss at Atlanta. He notched 3.9 YPC and 1 TD, which was setup by a defensive holding call. Montgomery added 3 catches for 54 yards through the air, with a big chunk coming on a beautiful downfield pass by Justin Fields. Rookie Trestan Ebner mixed in for 6 carries (0 targets), but he managed just 1.3 YPC. With Khalil Herbert set to miss at least 3 more games, Montgomery will remain a solid RB2 going forward. Next up is a road date with the Jets.

The Bears have placed RB Khalil Herbert on IR for the hip injury that knocked him out of Sunday's loss to the Lions. With rookie Tristan Ebner now the only other healthy RB on the roster, David Montgomery should be set up for plenty of work over at least the next 4 weeks, starting with a terrific matchup against the Falcons this week. We'll see about the expected return timeline for Herbert.

Bears RB David Montgomery remained the clear #1 back in workload for Sunday's win over the 49ers. He beat Khalil Herbert 17-9 in carries and led the team with 4 targets (among just 17 Justin Fields pass attempts). Montgomery caught 3 of those for 24 yards, while Herbert caught his lone target for a loss of 2. Herbert proved more efficient on the ground, though, tallying 45 yards (5.0 per rush) and the team's lone rushing score vs. just 26 yards (1.5 per rush) for Montgomery. Playing time went a little more than double in Montgomery's favor (66% vs. 29%). We'll see whether that changes going forward. Rookie RB Trestan Ebner got onto the field for just 4 offensive snaps.

Bears RB Trestan Ebner left Friday night's preseason game with an ankle injury and remained out for Saturday's practice, according to SB Nation's Windy City Gridiron. We'll see about the severity.

Speaking at minicamp, Bears HC Matt Eberflus gave his assessment of 6th-round rookie RB Trestan Ebner. “Just an explosive athlete who can run the whole route tree as you saw today on that great catch he made,” Eberflus said. “He’s been really learning a lot. He’s a mature young man and we like where he is in terms of learning the offense and what kind of man he is.” Ebner’s speed and pass-catching ability make him a name to watch in dynasty leagues. Across 5 years at Baylor, the 206-pounder racked up 127 catches. He’ll battle for the #3 job behind David Montgomery and Khalil Herbert.
