Washington has fired HC Jay Gruden, according to multiple reports. His team has started 0-5 with an unsettled QB situation, following 2 straight 7-9 campaigns. Washington has hired assistant HC/OL coach Bill Callahan as the interim HC. Callahan spent 2 years as the Oakland head man in 2002-03 and has been around the league in various capacities. It's tough to imagine how he might change the fortunes of Washington's (few) fantasy-relevant players. We'll be curious to see whether Callahan handles the QB spot any differently than Gruden, who was reluctant to thrust rookie Dwayne Haskins into the lineup. Colt McCoy went 18 of 27 passing for just 119 yards, 0 TDs and 1 INT while taking 6 sacks in Sunday's loss to New England, his 1st start in place of Case Keenum.

Washington CB Quinton Dunbar graduated to a full practice Thursday and seems on track to return Sunday against the Giants. Dunbar missed the past 2 games with a knee injury but returned to the field for the 1st time Wednesday (limited). As long as he's active, Dunbar will make for a nice Week 4 IDP option. HC Jay Gruden said Thursday it was "nothing major" after Dunbar went from limited Wednesday to not practicing Thursday. He also said, however, that Friday would be "a big day" for Dunbar and other injured players. Dunbar sat out again Friday. Plan on not having him available for your Week 2 IDP lineup. We'll check his status Sunday morning.

Washington believes DE Jonathan Allen suffered an MCL sprain in Sunday's loss to the Eagles, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. Allen is headed for an MRI but is expected to miss some time. That not only takes an IDP option away for however long he's out but hurts a Washington run defense that already stunk the past 2 years.

Washington has released starting ILB Mason Foster on the eve of the team opening training camp. Foster had spent offseason workouts in the same role he filled the past 2 years: starting MLB in the team's 3-4 base defense. His ouster leaves Shaun Dion Hamilton and recent signee Jon Bostic the likely inside starters. The move comes at the end of an offseason that saw fellow incumbent Zach Brown also get the boot and Reuben Foster tear an ACL. Bostic looks like the top IDP option there for now. We'll see what camp and the preseason reveal. Don't be surprised if the 30-year-old Mason Foster lands with another team.

Washington traded a 2nd-round pick in 2020 to jump from 46th to 26th and select Montez Sweat in the NFL Draft. Sweat delivered the top speed score for an EDGE player in Scouting Combine history. Sweat racked up 30 tackles for loss over the past 2 seasons. That included 22.5 sacks. He slipped in the draft because of a heart condition revealed in combine testing and some off-field concerns. (Michigan State kicked him out.) Sweat looks like a high-upside sack option for IDP owners. He'll get a LB designation, which hurts the outlook a bit.

The league will fine Washington LB Reuben Foster 2 game checks but not suspend him "following a review of recent incidents and an assessment of his adherence to obligations arising from previous violations of league policies." The statement from the NFL went on to say that evidence didn't indicate any further violation of the personal-conduct policy in the November incident that involved a girlfriend. Foster will now be available to take over the spot vacated when Washington cut Zach Brown in March. We'll see if the team adds any further competition in the NFL Draft. At the moment, Shaun Dion Hamilton looks like Foster's chief competition.

New Washington S Landon Collins doesn't seem to think his December shoulder surgery will be an issue for the coming season. "I'm way ahead of it," Collins told The Washington Times, when asked about his recovery and rehab. "It's definitely on schedule." The big contract certainly seems to indicate the team isn't worried. Barring some training camp setback, expect to find Collins near the top of our 2019 DB rankings.

Washington has released LB Zach Brown, according to NFL Network's Tom Pelissero. Brown graded out #3 among all LBs on Pro Football Focus last season but checked in much worse the year before. Washington now makes the 3rd team that has either booted Brown or let him walk in free agency -- and the 2nd of 3 teams to decrease Brown's playing time before he left. Brown has showed at each stop that he can put up strong fantasy numbers when starting. We'll see where he lands this time, heading into his age-30 season.
