Derek Carr Retiring; Tyler Shough Time?

        2:51pm UTC 5/10/25

Saints QB Derek Carr has announced he'll retire. We already knew there was a chance he'd miss some or all of the coming season because of an injury to his right shoulder. But this news obviously heightens the importance of rookie QB Tyler Shough's quick development and/or another plan for a "bridge" starter.

Jameis Winston In Line To Start Week 8

        10:01pm UTC 10/22/24

The Browns plan to start QB Jameis Winston in Sunday's game against the Ravens, according to insider Jordan Schultz. "My understanding is Dorian Thompson-Robinson was [Deshaun] Watson’s backup on Sunday strictly from a gameplan standpoint," Schultz adds. That suggests that Cleveland is opting to go with Winston over Thompson-Robinson regardless of Thompson-Robinson's finger injury. That'd be good news for Cleveland's pass catchers going forward.

Deshaun Watson Believed To Have Torn Achilles

        5:03pm UTC 10/20/24

Browns HC Kevin Stefanski said after Sunday's loss to the Bengals that QB Deshaun Watson is believed to have a torn Achilles. We should get confirmation on Monday. A torn Achilles would end Watson's season and threaten his availability for the start of the 2025 campaign. Cleveland also lost QB Dorian Thompson-Robinson to a finger injury against Cincinnati, leaving QB Jameis Winston at the controls. Consider Winston the favorite to start next weekend's game vs. the Ravens.

Jameis Winston Takes Over For Dorian Thompson-Robinson

        4:33pm UTC 10/20/24

Browns QB Dorian Thompson-Robinson was knocked out of Sunday's game vs. the Bengals with a fourth-quarter finger injury. With QB Deshaun Watson exiting earlier with an Achilles injury, QB Jameis Winston finished out the game for Cleveland. He gave the Browns the best QB play they've seen this season, completing 5 of 11 passes for 67 yards and a score. We'll see about the Watson and Thompson-Robinson injuries. But if the Browns are serious about winning, Winston will be under center going forward. He's worth adding in 2-QB and Superflex leagues.

Jameis Winston takes Browns backup job

        2:20pm UTC 3/12/24

The Browns and QB Jameis Winston have agreed to a one-year deal worth up to $8.7 million, according to insider Jordan Schultz. Winston had interest from "multiple teams," per Schultz, but was presumably not offered a starting job. He'll slide in behind QB Deshaun Watson in Cleveland. Watson is coming off a disappointing 2023 season that ended with a right shoulder injury that required surgery. Considering what the Browns are paying him, though, Watson will need to be even worse this year for Winston to see the field. Winston is only worth stashing in deeper superflex dynasty leagues. This signing means that QB Joe Flacco won't be back in Cleveland.

        Derek Carr limited Wednesday

        8:36pm UTC 12/6/23

Saints QB Derek Carr (concussion, rib, right shoulder) got in a limited practice on Wednesday. HC Dennis Allen said that Carr "feels pretty good” in terms of the rib and shoulder injuries and that it's the concussion that could keep him out for this weekend's game vs. the Panthers. We'll see how Carr progresses through the protocol over the next few days, but QB Jameis Winston is still the favorite to start on Sunday.

Derek Carr has concussion, rib injury

        4:28pm UTC 12/4/23

Saints HC Dennis Allen said Monday that QB Derek Carr is in concussion protocol and has a rib injury. It's Carr's second concussion in the past four weeks. We'll see about the rib injury, but Carr is unlikely to be cleared in time for Sunday's game vs. the Panthers. That'll put QB Jameis Winston under center, which is seemingly excellent news for WR Chris Olave.

Derek Carr out with multiple injuries

        4:10pm UTC 12/3/23

Saints QB Derek Carr is officially doubtful to return to Sunday's game vs. the Lions with a concussion, shoulder injury, and back injury. He took a big shot in the fourth quarter, giving way to QB Jameis Winston. Stay tuned for updates on Carr's status going forward.

        Derek Carr re-sprains right shoulder

        12:45pm UTC 11/13/23

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports that Saints QB Derek Carr sprained the AC joint in his throwing shoulder in Sunday's loss to the Vikings. He calls it a similar injury to Carr's previous shoulder issue and "might actually be" and aggravation of that previous injury. It's still not expected to be serious. And the Week 11 bye seems likely to put Carr on track to miss no further time. Frankly, we can't help but wonder if it would help WR Chris Olave's fantasy outlook if Carr did miss some time. We'll check back in on the New Orleans QB situation after the bye.

Derek Carr "hopeful" to return after bye

        6:34pm UTC 11/12/23

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport tweets that Saints QB Derek Carr is "hopeful" to be able to play after the Week 11 bye. He should clear the concussion protocol by then. We'll need to see about the shoulder. We should learn more about that injury on Monday. QB Jameis Winston will start if Carr misses more time and is worth adding in 2-QB and superflex leagues.

Derek Carr leaves after big hit

Saints QB Derek Carr exited Sunday's game vs. the Vikings after taking a big hit in the third quarter. He was replaced by QB Jameis Winston, who promptly completed three straight passes, capped by a TD to WR Chris Olave. We'll look for an update on Carr -- and see how Winston fares.

"A surprise" if Derek Carr plays Week 4

        11:06pm UTC 9/25/23

ESPN's Adam Schefter tweets that the Saints will be "cautious" with QB Derek Carr's shoulder injury. "It would be a surprise if Carr played Sunday vs. the Bucs," Schefter adds. It's looking like QB Jameis Winston will get the start against the team that took him No. 1 overall in the 2015 NFL Draft.

Derek Carr could miss Week 4

        7:32am UTC 9/25/23

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports that Saints QB Derek Carr is believed to have suffered an AC joint sprain in his right shoulder. Carr reportedly avoided "major" injury to the joint, but Rapoport says he'd be "a little surprised" if Carr were able to play in Week 4. Assuming he doesn't, Jameis Winston would get the start against Tampa Bay. Winston threw for 101 yards on 10-of-16 passing in relief against the Packers on Sunday. He's worth a pickup in superflex leagues for Week 4.

        Derek Carr avoided season-ending injury

        6:28pm UTC 9/24/23

The Saints believe QB Derek Carr avoided a season-ending injury, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. "He could still miss some time," Rapoport adds. It's relatively good news, but it sounds like we'll likely see QB Jameis Winston in the short term. We should have a better idea of Carr's timeline for return in the next 24 hours.

        Derek Carr taken to hospital

        5:14pm UTC 9/24/23

Saints QB Derek Carr was taken to a local hospital for additional testing after exiting Sunday's game vs. the Packers, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. "They will check for, among other things, internal injuries," Rapoport adds. We'll update Carr's status when we learn more. He was replaced in Green bay by QB Jameis Winston, who finished 10-of-16 for 101 yards, 0 TDs, and 0 INTs.
