NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports that Bears QB Justin Fields dislocated his left shoulder in Sunday's loss to the Falcons. In addition to deeming his QB "day to day," HC Matt Eberflus also didn't rule out the possibility of Fields missing the rest of the season. We should get a better sense of Fields' outlook over the next few days. If he's you're only QB right now, you should try to get an insurance option off waivers this week.
Bears QB Justin Fields posted 24 completions on 37 attempts for 216 passing yards with 1 TD and 1 INT in Sunday’s loss vs. the Packers. The speedster also added 59 yards on 9 carries with a lost fumble in the contest. It’s too early in the season to declare the Bears’ experiment of supporting Fields’ passing a failure, though fantasy managers didn’t see much evidence of a step forward in Week 1. It certainly wasn't for a lack of passing volume, either. Their big offseason acquisition, WR D.J. Moore, recorded just 2 catches for 25 yards. Fields will have a chance to bounce back in Week 2 vs. the Buccaneers, a team that surrendered the second-most passing yards (344) in the NFL on Sunday.
Bears WR Darnell Mooney said QB Justin Fields's biggest area of growth is his knowledge of the playbook. "There's no confusion there at all,” Mooney said on Wednesday. Per beat writer Courtney Cronin, Fields has called plays himself in walk-throughs during two-minute drills — something he didn’t do in 2022. Entering Year 2 in the same system, it’d be a disappointment if Fields wasn’t showing growth. The arrival of WR D.J. Moore simply adds to his passing ceiling.
Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer believes Bears QB Justin Fields has shown growth in training camp. Per Breer: “The ball’s coming out faster, and he’s throwing with more accuracy…[Fields] looks looser out there in large part because he’s moving more efficiently (with improved footwork) and the picture of all that’s around him is clearer to him than it was a year ago.” Chicago’s O-line received a shout-out, too — specifically the arrivals of G Nate Davis and Round 1 rookie OT Darnell Wright. See where Fields sits in our updated fantasy QB rankings.
ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler passed along an update on the development of Bears QB Justin Fields. "The people I've spoken to out of Chicago say that Fields is 'slingin' it' this offseason,” Fowler said on SportsCenter. “And that he's had a nice command of the Bears offense, [OC] Luke Getsy's second year in that system. He's changing plays at the line of scrimmage in OTAs and minicamp, felt good about taking ownership of things, how the offense should be run as a whole.” The coaching staff also wants Fields to be “more decisive” in 2023, with the goal of turning more scrambles into easy completions. While that sounds bad fantasy-wise, Fields was always a long shot to post another 1,100+ rushing yards. He still profiles as a weekly QB1.
Bears QB Justin Fields has spent much of the offseason working on his footwork. “He’s been really working on that, really good — in terms of the quick pass, drop-back pass, movement passes," HC Matt Eberflus said. "And he’s really made some big strides in that area." Fields finished 7th among QBs in fantasy points per game last year, despite averaging just 150 passing yards per game on a 60.4% completion rate and 7.1 yards per attempt. If he takes a step forward as a passer this year, Fields has the upside to lead his position in fantasy scoring. Besides the improved footwork, the arrival of WR D.J. Moore is exciting.
