Insider Aaron Wilson hears that Texans RB Joe Mixon is expected to be ready "at some point" during training camp. Mixon aggravated the right ankle injury he suffered last September while working out on his own this offseason, according to Wilson. He was in a walking boot in early June but has now graduated to a soft brace, Wilson adds.
While this doesn't sound like a serious injury, it's significant enough to put Mixon's availability for the start of training camp in question.
The Texans have beefed up their backfield this offseason, trading up to take RB Woody Marks in the third round of the draft and signing free-agent RB Nick Chubb. It's unclear if either move was a direct result of Mixon's injury.
We'll keep a close eye on Mixon's health when Texans training camp gets going next month. He still carries RB1 upside when healthy — but there's elevated risk until we know the ankle injury is behind him.
Mixon missed three games with last year's right ankle injury. He’s now missed time in five of eight NFL seasons with knee, foot, and ankle injuries, plus two concussions.
