Brian Hoyer Fantasy Football News | Shark Bites

The Browns have named QB Brian Hoyer their Week 3 starter.  QB Brandon Weeden is out with a sprained thumb.  Jason Campbell was believed to be the #2 QB, but Cleveland will roll with Hoyer against the Vikings on Sunday.  Hoyer might be a better overall talent than Campbell, but his subpar arm strength makes him a weak fit in the Browns' vertical attack.  Consider this bad news for WR Josh Gordon and TE Jordan Cameron.

Browns QB Brandon Weeden has a sprained thumb on his throwing hand.  HC Rob Chudzinski said the team will wait to assess the thumb over the next couple of days before determining whether Weeden will play in Week 3.  The AP reports, however, that Chud "seemed to be leaning" toward starting 1 of the backups.  Jason Campbell sits #2 on the depth chart and entered in the 4th quarter Sunday after Weeden got hurt.  The coach said he'll stay open to the option of starting 3rd-stringer Brian Hoyer as well.

Despite the additions of Jason Campbell and Brian Hoyer, it's sounding more and more like Brandon Weeden is the strong favorite for Cleveland's starting QB spot.  New OC Norv Turner spoke highly of Weeden on Monday.  "Brandon is a one-year player in the NFL who did a lot more good things than people give him credit for," Turner said. "I like his composure, the way he competes, he's worked awfully hard. He's got to be one of the hardest-working guys on our team. So you look and say, 'Hey, you hope there's a big upside.' He's got a big arm. He's very intelligent. He makes good decisions. He throws the ball up the field the way we would like to, but he's very accurate underneath."  Weeden would need to tank this summer to lose the starting gig.  We'll see if he can up his game enough to get into the QB2 discussion.

The Browns have signed QB Brian Hoyer to a 2-year deal.  His name was bandied about as a potential sleeper this offseason, but that was mostly because the free-agent QB class was so weak.  Hoyer has attempted only 96 regular-season passes, completing 59% with 2 TDs and 3 INTs.  The Cardinals released him earlier this week after they were unable to find a trade partner.  Hoyer isn't a realistic candidate for Cleveland's starting job.  He'll likely end up as the #3 QB behind Brandon Weeden and Jason Campbell.

Brian Hoyer could be in the mix for the Cardinals' starting QB job this summer.  That speaks more to Arizona's pathetic QB situation than Hoyer's ability.  The former undrafted free agent has attempted just 96 career NFL passes.  He bounced to 3 different teams last year, only seeing significant action with the Cardinals in the season's final 2 weeks.  Hoyer went 19 of 34 for 225 yards, 1 TD and 1 INT in a Week 17 start against the 49ers.  “Go watch the tape of that game,” a scout said. “Hoyer looked good against a tough 49ers defense. He looked better than [Ryan] Lindley and [John] Skelton, I'll tell you that much.”  Lindley is a restricted free agent but is expected to be retained by the Cardinals.  If he's their Week 1 starter, though, Arizona is in serious trouble.

Cardinals QB Brian Hoyer will start the team's finale against the 49ers on Sunday.  It's fitting that a guy signed just a few weeks ago would finish up the year under center.  Hoyer didn't embarrass himself last week, completing 11 of 19 passes for 105 yards, 0 TDs, and 1 INT in about 1 half of action.  More importantly, he found WR Larry Fitzgerald 4 times for 50 yards.

Cardinals QB Ryan Lindley was benched at halftime of Sunday's game against the Bears.  He was 17 of 30 for 141 yards with 0 TDs and 1 INT -- actually one of his better performances of the year.  Lindley was replaced by QB Brian Hoyer, who was signed just a couple weeks ago.  He'll likely finish out the game and start the season finale.

The Cardinals have added QB Brian Hoyer.  He's bounced around from New England to Pittsburgh and now Arizona this year.  Hoyer has attempted just 43 regular-season passes, but the former undrafted free-agent draws high marks from scouts for his football IQ and accuracy.  And as insider Jason La Canfora tweets, Hoyer "instantly becomes the best QB" on Arizona's roster.  He could get some playing time over the final 3 weeks but won't be a fantasy factor.

The Patriots have released QB Brian Hoyer.  It's surprising news.  Hoyer was considered a favorite of the coaching staff and the front-runner to serve as New England's backup QB.  That job will now go to 2nd-year signal-caller Ryan Mallett.  Both guys struggled this preseason, but Mallett edged Hoyer in completion percentage (49 to 47), yards-per-attempt average (4.5 to 4.2), and TDs (3 to 1).  Hoyer still figures to draw plenty of interest on the open market.

With QB Tom Brady sitting, the Patriots got strong debuts from his backups on Thursday night. Brian Hoyer opened by going 15-of-21 for 171 yards and a TD. Ryan Mallett followed with 12-of-19 passing for 164 yards and another TD. It did come against the Jaguars' pass D, but New England looks solid in the backup QB area. If Mallett, in particular, continues to play this way in exhibition season, he could provide a new name for disgruntled Dolphins fans to chant. Of course, these numbers also help to show that New England's receiving options aren't too shabby.
