The Chiefs on Tuesday applied their franchise tag to S Eric Berry. The veteran returned from cancer treatment to deliver a stellar 2015 season, according to Pro Football Focus grading. Chiefs GM John Dorsey said in a statement that the team intends to keep Berry around for the "foreseeable future," according to The Associated Press. Berry didn't supply terrific fantasy football value for IDP owners last season, but he has showed enough playmaking ability in the past to remain in our draft plans for 2016. His continued presence helps the team D for fantasy purposes.

Chiefs OLB Justin Houston returned to a limited practice Friday for the 1st time since suffering a knee injury at San Diego in Week 13. He's officially questionable for the game but a very risky IDP prospect. Fellow OLB starter Tamba Hali (thumb) is also questionable after missing practice all week. We'll see If he's ready to play nearly 2 weeks after surgery to repair a broken thumb, but we also wouldn't feel comfy betting on Hali in an IDP lineup. Getting 1 or both edge rushers back would raise the ceiling for the K.C. Team D, though.

Chiefs OLB Tamba Hali (thumb) is active for today's game against the Browns. He'll be playing his 1st game since Monday surgery for a broken thumb and thus might not be as effective as usual. There's plenty of upside to the matchup and Hali's talent, but the injury also brings some risk. Weigh that against your other IDP options this week.

Update: Hali was actually inactive for the game. We misread his status based on incomplete info on another website. Sorry for the error.

Chiefs OLB Tamba Hali (thumb) is questionable for Sunday's game against the Browns. He had surgery early this week after suffering a broken thumb in the Week 15 win at Baltimore. Hali missed all 3 practices this week and looks like a game-time decision. We'd lean away from using Hali even if he's active. The Chiefs might look to play him fewer snaps than usual, especially if they can build a lead over Cleveland. We also have to wonder how effective he'd be while likely working with a club on the repaired hand. If Hali sits, K.C. would start Dee Ford and Frank Zombo at the OLB spots, with Justin Houston still nursing a knee injury. The Chiefs still look like a strong team-D play, but injuries to both OLB starters lowers the scoring ceiling at least a bit.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reports that the Chiefs expect OLB Justin Houston to miss the rest of the regular season with his hyperextended knee. He's hoping to return for the playoffs, though, which won't help most IDP owners or users of the Kansas City D in fantasy football. OLB Dee Ford broke through for 3 sacks in Houston's absence last week. He's a decent option in sack-friendly IDP leagues against the Ravens this week and a high-ceiling play against the Browns in Week 16. Oakland presents a tougher sack matchup in Week 17. The Chiefs team D is starter-worthy for weeks 15 and 16 at least.

The Chiefs have ruled OLB Justin Houston (knee) out for this week. Dr. James Andrews confirmed this week the initial diagnosis of a hyperextended knee, which is better than what the issue could have been. “As I said before, it’s a hyperextended knee,” Chiefs trainer Rick Burkholder told the Kansas City Star. “He’s getting better now that his swelling is down and his motion is back.” We'll see if Houston can get back during this regular season. His absence gives Dee Ford another chance after a breakthrough game in Week 14.

The Chiefs have ruled out OLB Justin Houston for the 2nd straight game because of a knee injury. Losing him certainly lowers the ceiling for the team D for fantasy purposes, but Kansas City notched 4 sacks and picked 3 passes against the Raiders without Houston last weekend. Houston's replacement, Frank Zombo, collected 2 of the sacks.

Chiefs DE Allen Bailey will miss his 3rd straight game today with a calf injury. He's inactive against the Raiders, joining lead pass-rusher OLB Justin Houston on the sideline. That hurts the team D's fantasy outlook against a dangerous Raiders pass offense.

The Chiefs have ruled OLB Justin Houston out for Sunday's game in Oakland with the knee injury that knocked him out in Week 12. We'll check on his status heading into Week 14. Losing Houston is a significant blow against an explosive Raiders pass offense, adding risk to the Chiefs as a fantasy team defense.

Chiefs DE Allen Bailey (calf) is questionable for Sunday's game against the Raiders. He put in a full practice Friday after limited workouts the previous 2 days. Bailey has missed the past 3 games with the injury but might finally be ready to return. We'll check his status Sunday morning.

Chiefs HC Andy Reid said Wednesday that OLB Justin Houston is dealing with a hyperextended knee -- as opposed to a ligament sprain -- and that it has made "big improvements" so far this week, according to the team website. Reid called Houston day-to-day, according to Terez Paylor of the Kansas City Star, and hasn't ruled him out for Week 13.

Chiefs OLB Justin Houston suffered a sprained PCL in Sunday's win over the Bills, according to Terez Paylor of the Kansas City Star. That reportedly could cost him anywhere from 1 to 4 weeks. Frank Zombo took over for Houston against Buffalo, with Dee Ford out nursing a back injury for the 2nd straight game. The team website lists Ford as Hali's backup and Zombo behind Houston, so we're not sure how the Chiefs would handle the spot if both backups were healthy. We might find out in the coming weeks, however. Neither is worth a pickup in your IDP league right now. Houston's absence also hurts the team-D outlook and makes K.C. much tougher to like at a potentially explosive Raiders offense in Week 13.

Chiefs OLB Justin Houston left in the 1st half of Sunday's game against the Bills after suffering a knee injury. The team deemed him questionable to return. We'll pass along an update when we see one.

Update: The Chiefs have ruled Houston out for the game.

11:37pm EST 11/27/15

The Chiefs have ruled DE Allen Bailey out for the 3rd straight game because of a calf injury. His absence hasn't hurt 1 of the league's hottest defenses, and K.C. remains a strong team-D play at home against the Bills.

The Chiefs have ruled DE Allen Bailey (calf) out for Sunday's game against the Chargers. That's no surprise given that Bailey has missed every practice since he hurt his calf during last week's practice run.

Chiefs DE Allen Bailey has missed the 1st 2 days of practice this week after a mid-week calf injury last week kept him out of the win over the Broncos. The continued absences leave us expecting him to miss a 2nd straight game. That certainly wouldn't help the K.C. defense, but missing Bailey wouldn't knock the Chiefs out of fantasy-starter range.

Chiefs DE Allen Bailey will miss Sunday's rematch with the Broncos because of a calf injury. K.C. didn't look good as a fantasy team D this week anyway, but Bailey would have been an IDP option.

11:07am EDT 10/18/15

Chiefs OLB Tamba Hali (knee) is active for today's game at Minnesota. He had been questionable. The veteran hasn't had a particularly productive start to the season, though, and is only a marginal IDP option.

Chiefs S Eric Berry remains a 2nd-teamer heading into the regular season, and ESPN.com's Adam Teicher says the team is comfy with current starters Husain Abdullah and Ron Parker. "His role is unlikely to change unless the Chiefs need him in their lineup because of an injury to one of their starters," Teicher wrote about Berry. We've wanted to believe that Berry would earn his way back into the starting lineup, especially with Parker capable of playing CB. But we've got to move Berry down the DB rankings at this point. Parker looks like an IDP sleeper at this point. Berry ... we'll see.
