Giants RB Saquon Barkley recorded 9 carries for 61 yards and 2 catches for 21 yards in Saturday's Divisional Round loss vs. the Eagles. Though the Giants' season ended in a disappointing fashion, Barkley has a lot to be happy about entering free agency this offseason. The Pro Bowl back played in 16 games for the 1st time since his rookie season in 2018 and set a career-high in rushing yards (1,312) in 2022. The soon-to-be 26-year-old will be a dynamic fantasy asset regardless of what team he suits up for in 2023 and beyond. He said after Saturday's game that “everyone knows I want to be a Giant for life," taking away any potential mystery around his intentions. We'll see if his desire to return to New York comes to fruition in the coming weeks.
Giants RB Saquon Barkley told NFL Network's Taylor Rooks that he's dealing with a high-ankle sprain. Previous reports had it as a low-ankle sprain. Those tend to be less significant than high sprains. Barkley also told Rooks that his injury isn't as severe as it could have been but that he's not sure if he'll be ready for Week 4. High-ankle sprains usually cost guys at least 3-4 weeks, so Barkley owners should prepare to be without him beyond Week 3. We'll continue to track his rehab.
The Giants have officially ruled RB Saquon Barkley out for Thursday night's game against the 49ers. That's been expected since news broke of his Week 2 ankle sprain. Matt Breida is expected to be the first guy up in the Week 3 backfield, but that's only enough to land him in RB4 territory in our Week 3 RB rankings. Expect Gary Brightwell and rookie Eric Gray to mix in as well for a backfield that has been limited even with Barkley through two weeks.
Giants RB Saquon Barkley (ankle) did not practice on Tuesday. HC Brian Daboll said earlier in the day that Barkley still has a chance to play vs. the 49ers on Thursday night, but we're not buying it. We'll see how he's listed on the final injury report tomorrow.
Giants HC Brian Daboll refused on Tuesday to rule out RB Saquon Barkley (ankle) for Thursday night's game vs. the 49ers. “I’m not saying that he’s out yet,” Daboll said, adding that Barkley's ankle is feeling a lot better. We'd still be very surprised if Barkley played on the short week. But perhaps he ends up missing just one game. Stay tuned.
ESPN's Adam Schefter reports that Giants RB Saquon Barkley is expected to miss three weeks with his ankle injury. It's an "ordinary" sprain, rather than a high-ankle sprain, Schefter adds. It's all relatively good news, but fantasy owners will still need to prep to be without Barkley for the short term. Schefter's timeline would have him back for Week 6 vs. the Bills. Barkley's absence leaves the Giants' backfield to Matt Breida, Gary Brightwell, and rookie Eric Gray. Breida is the preferred fantasy add but shouldn't be considered more than a low-upside RB3 or flex.
