This move clearly indicates that the team couldn't find a suitable partner. That almost certainly comes down to the money involved, as Hopkins carried a $30.75 million cap hit for 2023. By waiting for the release, other teams can now negotiate their own deal with Hopkins rather than pay his huge existing contract. Arizona moves on with Marquise Brown as the lead WR. He was scoring in WR1 range last season before fracturing a foot and getting Hopkins back from suspension. Rondale Moore figures to operate as the No. 2 WR. The big question will be how much time he spends in the slot vs. outside. Candidates for the 3rd WR spot include veteran Greg Dortch and third-round rookie Michael Wilson. Dortch is clearly a slot guy, having spent 82.5% of his career pass snaps there. Wilson stands 6'2, 213 pounds and ran 76% of his college routes outside. Of course, Arizona also might play more 2-TE sets under new coaches, if Zach Ertz makes it back from his ACL tear in time to join second-year TE Trey McBride. Hopkins has 2 years and $34.4 million left on his current contract but is expected to angle for a new deal this offseason, per Schultz. Arizona, meanwhile, looks to be entering a rebuild phase after canning HC Kliff Kingsbury and losing GM Steve Keim. Hopkins turns 31 in June but remained effective this past year, posting a 64-717-3 line across 9 games. He ranked 9th among WRs in PPR points per game and 18th among 80 qualifiers in yards per route run.

On top of that, Hopkins will also see his 4th QB of the season. Colt McCoy's concussion symptoms resurfaced Friday, meaning he'll miss the game. Arizona will start David Blough over Trace McSorley. Blough -- who started 5 games for the 2019 Lions -- will have been with the team less than 3 weeks come game time. The whole situation makes it tough to like any Cardinals pass-catchers for Week 17. We're not significantly downgrading the outlook for RB James Conner, however.

Who would have guessed that any NFL wideout would be excited to see Colt McCoy enter the huddle? Cardinals WR DeAndre Hopkins should feel that way when McCoy returns to action for this Sunday's game against the Falcons. Hopkins has been targeted on 37.1% of McCoy's pass attempts this season, drawing 11+ in every one of the QB's appearances. The 1st 2 came with WR Marquise Brown out, but Hopkins got 11 looks and tallied 7 catches the past 2 times with Brown back in the lineup. (Brown saw 8 targets in each of those contests.) Hopkins, of course, didn't have a target issue last week with QB Trace McSorley, who threw 10 passes his way. But Hopkins caught just 1 of those. He has caught at least 7 balls in every game that has involved McCoy. Atlanta arrives as the 6th-best scoring matchup for WRs, which obviously helps Hopkins. Cardinals QB Colt McCoy has cleared the concussion protocol and is expected to start Sunday's game vs. the Falcons, ESPN's Adam Schefter reports. McCoy is no savior, of course. But he's a significant upgrade over QB Trace McSorley. McCoy's return is good news for RB James Conner and WRs DeAndre Hopkins and Marquise Brown.

WR Marquise Brown tallied 3 catches for 57 yards among 6 targets. Third-string QB Trace McSorley averaged just 4.8 yards per attempt on his 45 passes. We'll see whether QB Colt McCoy makes it back for a Week 17 date with the Falcons.

There's nothing to suggest that McSorley is an NFL-calibre QB. Consider him a significant downgrade from McCoy.

Hopkins still drew 6 targets and caught 4 balls for 87 yards and a TD. Brown managed 6 receptions for 46 yards. RB James Conner was the only other Cardinal to catch more than 1 pass. Brown's return could limit the target upside for Hopkins going forward, but there should be room for both at least as long as slot WR Rondale Moore is out.

Brown has been practicing for a couple of weeks now after going down back in Week 6. He carries elevated risk in his 1st game back but certainly has enough upside to make sense in plenty of fantasy lineups. Brown averaged 10.7 targets, 7.2 catches, 81 yards and .5 TDs over the first 6 games of the season -- although none of those came with WR DeAndre Hopkins.
