The Packers downgraded WR Davante Adams to doubtful late Saturday because of the left ankle sprain that limited him Monday night and had him in a walking boot this week. Green Bay also promoted WR Jared Abbrederis to the active roster. James Jones' fantasy-scoring floor rises with Adams out, and rookie WR Ty Montgomery adds some sleeper appeal -- especially in a positive passing matchup at San Francisco.

Packers WR Davante Adams (ankle) is listed as questionable for Sunday's game against the 49ers, despite not practicing all week.  Insider Rob Demovsky believes the questionable tag is "optimistic."  Adams needs to be on fantasy benches this week, especially with Packers-49ers not kicking off until 4:25 pm ET.  Look for James Jones and Ty Montgomery to serve as the #2 and #3 WRs behind Randall Cobb.

"It's just pretty much to make sure that I'm taking care of it. It's preventative for the most part. I don't want to do anything worse to it."  Adams seems extremely iffy to be ready for Sunday's game against the 49ers.  That'd leave James Jones and Ty Montgomery as the #2 and #3 WRs behind Randall Cobb.

Packers WR James Jones is listed on the 2nd team behind WR Davante Adams on the team's updated depth chart.  That suggests that Jones is Green Bay's #3 WR.  (Ty Montgomery is listed behind Randall Cobb; Jeff Janis on the 3rd team behind Jones.)  Jones doesn't have much gas left in his tank, but the #3 spot in the Packers' offense could make him a viable spot start option in fantasy.  We'll be keeping a close eye on how the WR snaps are divvied in this weekend's opener against the Bears.

The Packers have signed WR James Jones.  The 31-year-old averaged just 9.1 yards per catch in Oakland last year and was cut by the Giants earlier this week.  But he's familiar with the Packers offense and QB Aaron Rodgers, spending the first 7 years of his career in Green Bay.  Ideally, Jones will serve as a veteran presence and #5 WR this season.  But he could move up the depth chart if Ty Montgomery and/or Jeff Janis struggle.  He's worth stashing in deep fantasy leagues and monitoring in all others.

Packers QB Aaron Rodgers is looking for more consistency from WR Jeff Janis.  "Jeff will have some great days and some days where mentally he's making too many mistakes," Rodgers said.  He added that the "talent and athleticism are there" for Janis, but that doesn't mean much if he's not on the same page as his QB.  Ty Montgomery will open the season as Green Bay's #3 WR, but we're still not ruling out Janis taking over that spot at some point this year.  Both guys are intriguing late-round fliers.

In the Packers' 1st practice without WR Jordy Nelson on Tuesday, it was WR Ty Montgomery -- not WR Jeff Janis -- who worked with the 1st-team offense.  Montgomery and Davante Adams were on the outside, with Randall Cobb in the slot.  The 6'3, 219-pound Janis is the prototypical outside receiver, but he's reportedly been inconsistent at camp.  He was also a 7th-round pick.  Montgomery was a 3rd-rounder and was building momentum even before Nelson's injury.  The battle for Green Bay's 3rd WR spot is far from over and might ultimately be decided in the final 2 preseason games.  But Montgomery is just as intriguing a flier as Janis right now.

The Packers view WR Ty Montgomery as a "bigger Randall Cobb," according to insider Rob Demovsky.  The rookie has been impressing in a variety of roles early in training camp.  "You’ve seen how many different ways they use Cobb out of the backfield, out of the slot, end around type things. We’ve seen all of that already with Montgomery," Demovsky added.  "[Aaron] Rodgers has commented, and so has Jordy Nelson, just about how studious he is. When you study like that, you gain the trust of the quarterback."  Montgomery would need an injury to Nelson, Cobb or Davante Adams to have a shot at reliable fantasy value this season, but he's worth tracking in redraft leagues and stashing in dynasty setups.

The Packers added WR Ty Montgomery in the 3rd round of the 2015 NFL Draft.  Montgomery was a jack of all trades for Stanford, scoring 15 receiving TDs, 4 rushing TDs and 5 return TDs in 4 seasons.  He posted a 4.55-second 40 time and 40.5-inch vertical at 6'0 and 221 pounds at the Combine.  Montgomery looks more like a RB, and it's unclear exactly how he fits at the next level.  We trust the Packers to figure it out, but Montgomery figures to be more valuable to Green Bay than fantasy teams.  He'll be no better than 4th on the WR depth chart behind Jordy Nelson, Randall Cobb and Davante Adams.  There's some longer-team appeal here considering the Packers' success at drafting WRs.
