Bears RB David Montgomery has been taking reps with the special teams in training camp. “Wherever they need me, I’m going to be ready to be there,” he said. “I’ve never played special teams before. But I’m always down and excited to learn so I can be better.” Per The Athletic, "Montgomery said it was as simple as seeing his name on the depth chart and going to the special teams drills." We're not sure what to make of this. It could be the Bears just toying around with different options early in training camp. Or it could mean that Montgomery's role on offense will be scaled back this season. We'll see if we learn anything on that front in preseason action. RB Khalil Herbert notably beat Montgomery in both Pro Football Focus rushing grade and Elusive Rating last year.

Adam Jahns of The Athletic writes that RB Khalil Herbert “looks poised for a larger role” in year 2. The former 6th round pick wasn’t drafted by new GM Ryan Poles. And he’s learning a different offense under new HC Matt Eberflus and OC Luke Getsy. Still, one look at the Bears’ depth chart says Herbert’s close to a lock for the #2 job behind David Montgomery. At a minimum, it’s encouraging that he handled 18, 19, 18 and 23 carries early in his rookie year with Montgomery sidelined. Ultimately, we don’t anticipate Herbert seeing enough work to gain standalone fantasy value. But one Montgomery injury would likely place the 2nd-year back firmly in RB2+ territory.

Speaking at minicamp, Bears HC Matt Eberflus gave his assessment of 6th-round rookie RB Trestan Ebner. “Just an explosive athlete who can run the whole route tree as you saw today on that great catch he made,” Eberflus said. “He’s been really learning a lot. He’s a mature young man and we like where he is in terms of learning the offense and what kind of man he is.” Ebner’s speed and pass-catching ability make him a name to watch in dynasty leagues. Across 5 years at Baylor, the 206-pounder racked up 127 catches. He’ll battle for the #3 job behind David Montgomery and Khalil Herbert.

The Bears fired HC Matt Nagy. This move has been anticipated for weeks now. Nagy went 12-4 in his first season at the helm but totaled only 22 wins over the past 3 seasons. He also didn't seem to maximize QB Justin Fields' skill set this year. Chicago's next HC hire will be key for Fields' development.

Update: Chicago also fired GM Ryan Pace.

Bears HC Matt Nagy said Friday that QB Nick Foles will start Sunday's game vs. the Seahawks. QB Andy Dalton (left hand, groin) is out for Week 16, while QB Justin Fields (ankle) was unable to practice on Thursday or Friday. Nagy said that Fields might be active on Sunday, but it'd be as Foles' backup. Foles made 7 starts for the Bears last season, averaging 238 yards, 1 TD and 1 INT on a 66% completion rate and 5.9 yards per attempt.

Bears RB David Montgomery (shoulder, groin, glute) is not listed on the final injury report after putting in a full practice on Friday. He should be ready for a workhorse role on Sunday night against the Packers.

Bears RB David Montgomery (shoulder, groin, glute) returned to a limited practice on Thursday. He should be fine for Sunday night's game vs. the Packers, but we'll get another update on Montgomery tomorrow.

Bears RB David Montgomery did not practice on Wednesday and is on the injury report with shoulder, groin and glute issues. This looks like a rest day after Montgomery racked up 29 touches in Sunday's loss to the Cardinals, but we'll get another update tomorrow.

Bears RB David Montgomery (knee) has been activated from IR, putting him in line to play vs. the Steelers tonight. It'll be his first action since Week 4. HC Matt Nagy said earlier this week that Montgomery remains the lead back when healthy -- but it's unclear if he's ready to step back into that role tonight. Montgomery and RB Khalil Herbert are risky fantasy plays tonight.

Bears HC Matt Nagy said Saturday that there's a "really good chance" RB David Montgomery plays against the Steelers on Monday night. Montgomery returned to practice on Thursday after going down with a sprained knee back in Week 4. RB Khalil Herbert has played very well in relief, but Nagy said earlier this week that a healthy Montgomery remains the lead back. What's unclear is whether Montgomery is ready to take back that lead role on Monday night. Your best bet is to avoid this backfield in Week 9 fantasy lineups.

Bears HC Matt Nagy made it clear that RB David Montgomery will "still get the bulk of the carries" when he's recovered from his knee injury, according to insider Mark Grote. Montgomery returned to practice on Thursday, but his status for Monday night's game against the Steelers remains uncertain. When he does return, though, he'll be the superior fantasy option to RB Khalil Herbert, who's played very well in relief of Montgomery.

Bears RB David Montgomery will practice on Thursday for the 1st time since spraining his knee back in Week 4. Montgomery is eligible to play vs. the Steelers on Monday night, but it's still unclear if he will. It's worth noting that the Bears have a Week 10 bye, so they could opt to hold Montgomery out for 1 more game and get him another week of rest.

The Bears placed RB David Montgomery (knee) on IR, knocking him out for at least the next 3 weeks. NFL Network's Ian Rapoport says "3-5 weeks" is Montgomery's timetable for return. We'll see if he can make it back before Chicago's Week 10 bye.

Bears RB David Montgomery (knee) is out for Sunday’s game vs. the Raiders. He’s expected to miss 4-5 weeks but hasn’t yet been placed on IR. Damien Williams should operate as Chicago’s clear lead back this weekend, with rookie Khalil Herbert as the #2 RB.

Bears RB David Montgomery is expected to miss 4-5 weeks with a sprained knee, ESPN's Dan Graziano reports. Chicago has a Week 10 bye, so it's possible that we don't see Montgomery again until Week 11. He was looking like a high-end RB2 before going down, so we'd try to keep him stashed on fantasy benches. Damien Williams is set to take over as Chicago's lead back, assuming his quad injury doesn't keep him out. Rookie Khalil Herbert is now #2 on the depth chart. Remember, too, that RB Tarik Cohen (ACL) is eligible to come off the PUP list in Week 7.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports that Bears RB Damien Williams suffered only a bruise to his quad late in Sunday's game and "should be OK." Williams would be taking over the backfield lead if David Montgomery is out with his knee injury. Rapoport adds that Montgomery "may miss some time," but we're still waiting on an official diagnosis.

The "initial belief based on early tests" is that Bears RB David Montgomery's knee injury is not major, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. Montgomery hyperextended the knee and is set for an MRI on Monday. We should get a more concrete diagnosis then. Damien Williams will step in as Chicago's lead back if Montgomery misses time.
