Falcons RB Tevin Coleman (ribs) has officially been ruled out for Sunday’s game against the Cowboys. Consider the rookie questionable for Week 4. Devonta Freeman will serve as Atlanta’s feature back this weekend. A subpar runner but reliable pass-catcher, he’s a fine RB2 with more appeal in PPR formats.

Falcons RB Tevin Coleman fractured a rib in Sunday's game against the Giants, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.  He's expected to miss "a couple of weeks."  Rib injuries usually come down to pain tolerance, so the timeline here could swing a week or 2 shorter or longer.  With Coleman sidelined, Devonta Freeman will serve as Atlanta's lead back.  He's been horrible on the ground so far, averaging 2.0 yards per carry on 22 totes.  Freeman has at least caught 7 balls for 63 yards.  Despite the rushing struggles, 15 or so touches per game in a high-powered offense will make him a fantasy starter as long as Coleman is out.  The rookie should regain the starting job when healthy.

Falcons RB Tevin Coleman suffered a rib injury in the 2nd quarter of Sunday's game against the Giants.  He's questionable to return.  Devonta Freeman will serve as Atlanta's lead back if the rookie remains sidelined.

Falcons RB Devonta Freeman (hamstring) is probable for Monday night's game against the Eagles.  He put in full practices on Friday and Saturday, which suggests that he'll be a full-go.  It's unclear exactly how the backfield touches will be split between Freeman and Tevin Coleman, though, leaving both guys as risk/reward RB3s.

Falcons RB Devonta Freeman (hamstring) graduated to a full practice on Friday.  It puts him on track to play against the Eagles on Monday night -- and makes the Atlanta backfield better off avoided in fantasy lineups.  Freeman and rookie Tevin Coleman figure to split touches against an underrated Philly run D.

Falcons RB Devonta Freeman (hamstring) was limited in Thursday's practice.  His status for Monday night's opener against the Eagles is uncertain.  If Freeman can't play, RB Tevin Coleman would be a more intriguing fantasy start.  But we might now know Freeman's status until 90 minutes before kickoff.

Falcons RB Tevin Coleman is listed atop the Week 1 depth chart.  The rookie missed part of August with a hamstring injury but carried 8 times for 56 yards in the preseason finale.  RB Devonta Freeman, meanwhile, didn't play at all in the preseason with a hamstring injury of his own.  His status for Monday night's opener against the Eagles remains uncertain.  If Freeman can't play in that one, Coleman will become an intriguing fantasy start in what projects as a shootout.

Falcons RBs Tevin Coleman and Devonta Freeman each returned to the field Monday morning after sitting out a while with hamstring strains, according to D. Orlando Ledbetter of the Atlanta Journal Constitution. Coleman had been out since Aug. 5, while Freeman followed him to the sideline the next day. With 3 preseason games yet to go, the 2 should have plenty of time to duke it out for roles in a high-value backfield situation for fantasy football owners. We'll see if coaches decide to get Coleman and/or Freeman into game action when Atlanta visits the Jets this Friday.

NFL Network's Tiffany Blackmon reports that Falcons RBs Devonta Freeman and Tevin Coleman "are both expected to miss a few more weeks." Each player is dealing with a hamstring injury, which can prove recurring -- especially if a guy returns too soon. Antone Smith and undrafted free agent Terron Ward have seen 1st-team action with the other 2 out. Given the injury timeline, we'd expect Atlanta to add another RB in free agency as well. The injuries will significantly condense -- and impact -- 1 of fantasy's most intriguing camp battles.

Falcons insider Vaughn McClure hears that RBs Tevin Coleman and Devonta Freeman are expected to miss "a minimum of 2 weeks" with their hamstring injuries.  They're clearly dealing with more than minor tweaks.  The missed time is a bigger deal for the rookie Coleman, but remember that Freeman is also operating in a new offense under OC Mike Shahanan.  The good news is that both guys should be available for Week 1, barring setbacks.  And Atlanta doesn't have another viable lead-back option, unless the new staff sees that kind of potential in the 5'9, 192-pound Antone Smith.  For now, consider Freeman the favorite to open the season as Atlanta's starter.

Falcons RB Devonta Freeman left Thursday's practice with a hamstring injury.  There's no word yet on the severity, but insider Orlando Ledbetter says Freeman was "being consoled" by teammate Roddy White after going down.  "Hopefully it's a quick turnaround for him to get back," HC Dan Quinn said.  Freeman's injury comes just a couple of days after RB Tevin Coleman went down with his own hamstring problem.  We'll see which guy is able to get back on the field first.  In the meantime, RB Antone Smith figures to get some run with the starters.

Falcons RB Tevin Coleman missed Wednesday's practice with what HC Dan Quinn labeled a "hamstring strain."  Quinn added, "hopefully Coleman will be back soon."  It doesn't sound like a serious injury, but hamstrings can be tricky.  Coleman can't afford to miss much time as he tries to push RB Devonta Freeman for the lead role.  We'll adjust our Atlanta backfield projections if Coleman remains sidelined into next week.

The Falcons worked RB Tevin Coleman with the 1st team a bit on Saturday. According to ESPN.com, it was part of the team's plan at multiple positions to give guys starter reps to see what they could do. Coleman still sits behind Devonta Freeman on the depth chart. We'll see where the competition goes from here.

ESPN's Dianna Marie Russini hears that the Falcons believe RB Devonta Freeman is "right" for OC Kyle Shanahan's zone-blocking scheme.  Freeman mustered just 3.8 yards per carry last season, but that was in a completely different system under former OC Dirk Koetter.  Russini adds that Freeman "could have a big year" under Shanny.  Of course, he'll first need to hold off talented rookie RB Tevin Coleman.  But Freeman is a fine shot to take at his late-7th-round ADP.

Falcons RB Devonta Freeman opened spring practices as the starter and still "has the edge now," according to insider Vaughn McClure.  That's not a big surprise considering Freeman has a year in OC Kyle Shanahan's offense under his belt.  Rookie Tevin Coleman is just learning the system -- and also suffered a minor groin injury near the end of minicamp.  This battle won't be decided until training camp, though, and will very likely end up as a committee.  For what it's worth, McClure believes "both players are more than capable of having success in Kyle Shanahan's outside zone-blocking scheme."

When the Falcons opened OTAs Tuesday, RB Devonta Freeman ran with the 1st team while rookie RB Tevin Coleman stuck with the 2nd team. ESPN's Vaughn McClure pointed out that Coleman "got plenty of chances to carry the ball and catch" passes. He also deemed Freeman "as impressive as he was this time last year, save for one drop." It's way too early, of course, to treat this as an indicator of the regular-season depth chart. Teams tend to defer to incumbents in these situations and make rookies earn their playing time. We still expect a split workload between the 2 talented young backs. The situation will be among the most interesting for fantasy football owners to track through the summer.

The Falcons added RB Tevin Coleman in the 3rd round of the 2015 NFL Draft.  The Indiana product racked up 2,036 yards on a ridiculous 7.5 yards per carry this past season.  He's a big play waiting to happen, busting off 10 TDs of 25+ yards.  Coleman also ranked 4th among RBs with 100+ carries by averaging 3.2 yards after contact per carry, according to ESPN’s Sharon Katz.  And he the led draft class with 4.03 yards after contact per carry.  On the downside, Coleman's tape shows a guy with questionable vision and little make-you-miss ability.  He needs holes to succeed and is joining a subpar Falcons offensive line.  But OC Kyle Shanahan has an impressive history with RBs, which bodes well for Coleman's fantasy outlook.  He'll need to beat out Devonta Freeman for work.
