Saquon Barkley Leaves With Groin Injury

Eagles RB Saquon Barkley exited with a groin injury at the end of the third quarter of Sunday's game vs. the Giants. He was in obvious discomfort and headed straight to the medical tent. We'll update Barkley's status when we know more. Barkley has having a huge day before exiting, totaling 174 yards and two TDs. His absence leaves Philadelphia with RBs Tank Bigsby, Will Shipley, and A.J. Dillon.

        Saquon Barkley Listed "DNP" Monday

Eagles RB Saquon Barkley is listed as "did not practice" with a knee issue on Monday's injury report. The team didn't actually practice just a day after their loss to Denver. Barkley recorded a season-low 6 carries on a season-low 72% snap rate in that one, and the knee could have been a factor. Of course, we're also talking about a veteran RB on a short week, so this could turn out to be nothing at all. We'll update Barkley's status again on Tuesday. His absence vs. the Giants on Thursday night would likely leave RBs Will Shipley and A.J. Dillon working in a timeshare.

Update: Per NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, Barkley had "general soreness" coming out of the Broncos game and "fully expects" to play on Thursday night.

Will Shipley Hurts Ribs In Opener

Eagles RB Will Shipley suffered a rib injury in the first half of Thursday night's opener vs. the Cowboys. He was officially deemed "questionable" to return but never did. The second-year back got involved early, with two carries for 25 yards on Philadelphia's opening possession. He carried once more on the second possession before getting hurt. A.J. Dillon operated as the Eagles' No. 2 RB the rest of the way. We'll update Shipley's status when we learn more.

Key Eagles Won't Play Week 18

Eagles QB Jalen Hurts (concussion) is out for Sunday's game vs. the Giants. He should be cleared in time to play in next week's Wild Card game. RB Saquon Barkley and WRs A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith are listed as doubtful. They won't play in this meaningless game. TE Dallas Goedert (knee) is not listed on the final injury report and could get a few snaps in this one to knock off some rust. We'd still avoid him in Week 18 fantasy lineups. QB Kenny Pickett (ribs) is listed as questionable but didn't practice all week. We're expecting QB Tanner McKee to get the start. RB Will Shipley (concussion) is listed as questionable but was a full-go in the final two practices of the week. He should be cleared for this one and figures to operate as Philadelphia's lead back.

Will Shipley to sit behind Saquon Barkley in Philadelphia

The Eagles selected Clemson RB Will Shipley in the fourth round of the 2024 NFL Draft. A five-star recruit and the No. 2 RB in the 2021 recruiting class, Shipley had a productive three-year career at Clemson. He totaled 2,748 rushing yards, 602 receiving yards, and 33 TDs. He’s coming off a disappointing 2023 junior campaign, though, running for just 827 yards on 5.0 yards per carry. And Shipley never fared well in advanced metrics, ranking outside the top-65 RBs in Pro Football Focus’ Elusive Rating each of the last three years. That includes a 51.5 Elusive Rating this past season – 118th among 159 qualifiers. Shipley is a bit undersized at 206 pounds with just average power and long speed. Durability is a concern, too. Shipley suffered left leg and foot injuries in 2021, a concussion in 2022, and a left knee injury in 2023. He’s at his best in the passing game, where he flashes reliable hands, good vision, and plenty of make-you-miss ability. Shipley is unlikely to be a high-volume ball carrier as a pro, but his pass-catching ability could certainly make him an asset in PPR fantasy leagues. He joins an Eagles backfield that will be dominated by Saquon Barkley for the foreseeable future. Barkley is signed through the 2026 season. Shipley will battle Kenneth Gainwell for snaps behind Barkley this year.
