Niners bring in Bethea | Shark Bites | Draft Sharks

The 49ers signed former Colts S Antoine Bethea to a 4-year, $26 million deal on Tuesday.  We'll guess that less than half of his new deal is guaranteed and that Bethea won't finish out the contract.  He's heading into his age-30 season and has never been an elite talent.  But Bethea's decent in all areas and hasn't missed a game since 2007.  Despite coming off 4 straight 100+ tackle seasons, he likely won't sit high in our 2014 IDP rankings.  Bethea replaces S Donte Whitner -- who signed with Cleveland -- and doesn't alter the outlook for the team D.

Recent Shark Bites

The Giants have reached a 2-year deal with S Antoine Bethea, according to multiple reports. Bethea will replace Landon Collins at SS and stands a solid chance of returning worthwhile IDP value. Just set your expectations below what he scored for the Cards last year.

The Cardinals have reached a deal with veteran S Antoine Bethea, shortly after the 49ers released him. Arizona appears likely to lose starting S Tony Jefferson, who has been rumored to be choosing between offers from the Browns and Ravens. Bethea could step into Jefferson's spot and would carry solid IDP value if he plays full time.

The injury that knocked 49ers S Antoine Bethea out of Thursday night's loss to the Seahawks has been diagnosed as a torn pectoral muscle, according to Matt Barrows of the Sacramento Bee. The team placed him on IR Sunday. That likely leaves the starting job to rookie Jaquiski Tartt, a hard-hitter who has already seen some limited time in the box as a sub-package defender. Tartt will be interesting to watch for IDP purposes. He delivered 9 tackles -- including 7 solo, 1 for a loss -- against Seattle.

49ers S Antoine Bethea left Thursday night's game against the Seahawks in the 1st half with a right shoulder injury. He returned to the sideline in street clothes by the middle of the 3rd quarter. That doesn't seem to bode well for Bethea's immediate availability beyond this week. We'll check on his status heading into Week 8. Rookie Jaquiski Tartt replaced Bethea against Seattle and could approximate Bethea's IDP value if he started in the veteran's place.

49ers S Antoine Bethea sustained a concussion in Sunday's 2nd preseason game.  He said via Twitter on Sunday night that he's "doing well."  The team gave no indication of the injury's severity but has said that it expects Bethea to be ready in time for the Sept. 7 season opener, according to CSN Bay Area.  Treat Bethea as you normally would have in your IDP draft, though Niners safeties have not been terrific fantasy options since HC Jim Harbaugh arrived.
