The Jets selected QB Christian Hackenberg with the 51st pick of the 2016 NFL Draft. Hackenberg looked like a potential future #1 overall pick after completing 58.9% of his passes with 20 TDs and 10 INTs as a true freshman in 2013. But his play fell off a cliff the past 2 seasons, with a 54.8% completion rate, 28 TDs and 21 INTs. Hackenberg has prototypical size (6’4, 223 pounds) and plenty of arm strength. But his inconsistent accuracy is a major concern. The Jets obviously see them as their QB of the future but the plan is to start him off on the bench, per NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport. We’ll see if New York can reach a contract agreement with QB Ryan Fitzpatrick.

Jets QB Christian Hackenberg got the start in Saturday night's preseason game and proceeded to embarrass himself. He completed 8 of 15 passes for 60 yards, 0 TDs and 2 INTs. Both picks were returned for scores by the Giants. If the Jets are interested in winning (and they honestly might not be), they can't consider Hackenberg a viable option for the Week 1 starting job. QB Bryce Petty lit it up after replacing Hackenberg. QB Josh McCown was held out. This is obviously a situation you're staying far, far away from in fantasy drafts.

Update: Hackenberg re-entered late in the 4th quarter for an injured Petty and led a TD drive. He finished 12 of 21 for 126 yards, 1 TD and 2 INTs.

If you're cracking jokes about Jets QB Christian Hackenberg's accuracy, then QBs coach Jeremy Bates says you need to cut it out. “I think he’s real accurate,” Bates told the New York Daily News. “I think he’s throwing the ball well. He’s throwing it on time. Part of accuracy is knowing where to go with the ball, and each day, he plays faster. He gets in a rhythm. And I think everyone in the building is excited to see where he’s going. I think he’s accurate.” OK. We'll need to actually see that, though, before believing it. At least if Hackenberg can prove his coach right, he should compete for playing time.

The Jets would prefer rookie QB Christian Hackenberg to spend 2016 learning from the sideline but won't rule out him getting on the field.  "With any player coming into the league, there's definitely a maturation process. And it doesn't matter what position you play. I think quarterbacks are probably one of the harder positions to transition to the NFL," GM Mike Maccagnan said. "The reality of it is, though, is it's going to be determined by how he does."  Hackenberg's chance to play this season will grow if the Jets aren't able to bring back QB Ryan Fitzpatrick.  Inaccurate throughout his college career (56.1% completion rate), Hackenberg would be bad news for WRs Brandon Marshall and Eric Decker.
