The Chargers have ruled DE Joey Bosa (concussion), S Rayshawn Jenkins (ankle) and CB Casey Hayward (hamstring) out for Sunday's game against the Chiefs. S Jahleel Addae -- Jenkins' replacement -- is also questionable for the game after missing practice all week. We'll check his status when inactives come out Sunday.
Chargers CB Chris Harris Jr. is out for Sunday's game against the Cowboys with a shoulder injury. That leaves L.A. without its top cover man and primary slot corner. Dallas WR Cedrick Wilson likely stands to benefit the most. With Michael Gallup out, Wilson will serve as the #3 wideout and played 85% of his pass snaps in the slot in Week 1.
The Chargers have named Brandon Staley their new HC. The 38-year-old has been a fast riser, going from a LBs coach in Chicago and Denver to Rams defensive coordinator to Chargers HC in just 5 years. Staley's 2020 Rams defense was better than Wade Phillips' 2019 unit in points allowed, total yards allowed, yards per play allowed and Football Outsiders' DVOA. This at least looks like a good hire for the Chargers defense. We'll see who joins Staley to run the offense.
The Chargers have fired HC Anthony Lynn. He cost his team multiple chances to win this season with poor in-game management. Lynn finishes his 4-year run with the Chargers with a 33-31 record but went just 12-20 over the past 2 seasons. Whoever takes over this team will be working with a strong core in QB Justin Herbert, RB Austin Ekeler and WR Keenan Allen -- plus a talented defense.
Chargers CB Casey Hayward is active for today's game against the Raiders. He was a surprise addition to the injury report with a personal situation on which HC Anthony Lynn declined to elaborate. But the team's top corner will play. DE Joey Bosa (concussion) is inactive, as expected. His replacement, Isaac Rochell, will play. Rochell hit the day questionable with a neck issue.
The Chargers have activated safeties Derwin James and Adrian Phillips from IR, and ESPN's Eric D. Williams reports that both are expected to play today against the Broncos. The report also says HC Anthony Lynn will closely monitor the playing time for both players "if they are active." Lynn said: "It's just hard for guys to be out 10, 12 weeks, come back and pick up where they left off. We have to be careful putting guys back out too soon or back out there before they're ready." Both players carry significant IDP upside as full-timers, but it'll obviously be risky to use either guy in his 1st game off IR. Try to hold off for Week 13. Phillips' role could also affect the playing time for others at LB.
