Niners add Gallman | Shark Bites | Draft Sharks

The 49ers have signed RB Wayne Gallman to a 1-year deal. He joins a depth chart that also includes Raheem Mostert, Jeff Wilson Jr., JaMycal Hasty and Austin Walter. With the Giants in 2020, Gallman actually outperformed both Wilson and Mostert in Football Outsiders' rushing DYAR and DVOA, ranking top-12 in each category. Gallman also earned a higher rushing grade than Wilson from Pro Football Focus and narrowly trailed Mostert in that category (77.0 to 76.4). Mostert is going in the middle of Round 7 in FFPC best-ball ADP as RB28; Wilson sits late in Round 9 at RB37. Neither is going early enough that you need to remove them from your drafting plans. But Gallman's 2020 performance makes him worth considering in a backfield that likes to spread touches around. For now, consider sprinkling in some late Gallman shares into your best-ball drafting. We'll see how things settle out through the summer.

Recent Shark Bites

Giants RB Wayne Gallman exited in the 1st quarter of Sunday's game against the Vikings to get checked for a concussion. We'll update his status when we learn more. Gallman's absence would leave Jon Hilliman as New York's lead back.

Update: Gallman has a concussion and is done for the day.

Giants RB Wayne Gallman is questionable to return to Sunday's game against the Jaguars with a knee injury. He'd been serving as Saquon Barkley's backup. Jonathan Stewart will step into that role for however long Gallman is out.

NJ.com's Matt Lombardo believes Wayne Gallman -- not Jonathan Stewart -- has the "inside track" to win the Giants' #2 RB job. Lombardo notes Gallman's burst, elusiveness and pass-catching ability as edges over Stewart, who looked like "a plodding veteran running back trying to hang on" this spring. It's a situation we'll monitor when training camp opens, but neither guy is worth a pick outside of deep best-ball drafts. The bigger takeaway here is that rookie Saquon Barkley is already entrenched as the Giants' feature back.

Giants HC Ben McAdoo suggested that his backfield will continue to be a committee. "We have very capable backs we have a lot of confidence in," McAdoo said. "[Paul] Perkins is obviously nicked up. He's a good back. We still believe in him, have a lot of confidence in him. You saw the energy that [Wayne] Gallman brought to the game. Orleans [Darkwa] is a guy we can throw in and be a big, productive runner for us. And Shane [Vereen] is going to play his role." Perkins and Darkwa both put in limited practices on Wednesday, giving them a shot to play this weekend vs. the Chargers. McAdoo added that, "if somebody gets hot, we'll ride him." But if Perkins is active on Sunday, this will be a backfield to avoid in fantasy lineups.

Giants RB Wayne Gallman is "clearly" 4th on the depth chart behind Paul Perkins, Shane Vereen and Orleans Darkwa, according to insider Dan Duggan. Rookies tend to start their careers buried on the depth chart, but Gallman doesn't seem to be ascending. He "has had a quiet camp," notes Duggan. Gallman isn't worth a pick in redraft leagues at this point. Perkins, meanwhile, remains locked in as New York's lead back.
