Texans TEs Darren Fells (hip) and Jordan Akins (hamstring) are both listed as questionable for Sunday's game against the Chiefs. Akins was limited in practice all week with the hamstring injury that kept him out of last Saturday's win over the Bills. Fells was added to the injury report and limited in practice on Friday. We'll look for updates on both guys and will get their official statuses around 1:30 pm ET on Sunday.
The Texans made a couple of minor moves at TE on Thursday, releasing Darren Fells and trading a 7th-round pick to New England for Ryan Izzo. Fells ranked 8th on the team and 2nd among TEs with 28 targets last season. He'll turn 35 in April and is on his last legs. Izzo totaled just 19 catches for the Patriots over the past 2 years -- although he did average a big 16.5 yards per. TE Jordan Akins looks set to enter 2021 as Houston's clear-cut starter, unless the team makes a more significant move at the position.
Texans TE Darren Fells (hip) is active for today's game against the Chiefs. TE Jordan Akins' absence adds upside to Fells -- although it's unclear how big an issue that hip injury will be.
Darren Fells, not Troy Niklas or Jermaine Gresham, is the favorite for starting TE duties in Arizona this season. “It’s going to really, really hard to beat him out," HC Bruce Arians said Monday. Fells played basketball in college and then professionally overseas before heading to the NFL in 2013. He saw his 1st regular-season action last year and totaled 6 catches, 72 yards and a TD in the Cardinals' final 4 contests (including playoffs). Fells is a monstrous 6'7, 281-pounder with some red-zone upside. But he spent 73.4% of his snaps blocking last season. He figures to play a similar role in 2015. Niklas and Gresham could still both finish with more fantasy points than Fells. The takeaway here, though, is that you should avoid all Cardinals TEs in your draft.
