Chargers TE Antonio Gates caught just 1 of 2 targets for 11 yards vs. Oakland. He out-snapped Hunter Henry 35-29, but the rookie garnered 4 targets and found the end zone. Now scoreless in 4 straight, Gates at least enters a great rebound spot this week at Cleveland.

Recent Shark Bites

Chargers HC Anthony Lynn said Tuesday that he's waiting to see how TE Antonio Gates looks in practice this week before deciding whether he'll play in the opener vs. Kansas City. “I don’t want to put him in a position where he goes out and hurts himself, and then it sets us back four or five weeks,” Lynn said. Gates can't be trusted in Week 1 fantasy lineups but could eventually emerge as a spot-start option.

The Chargers have agreed to a deal with veteran TE Antonio Gates, ESPN's Adam Schefter reports. The move doesn't come as a surprise. Rumors of such have been swirling at least since Hunter Henry suffered his ACL tear. Gates joins a TE group that sported just 1 player with NFL catches (Virgil Green: 71 across 7 seasons). Gates should continue to be a red-zone option for QB Philip Rivers, as he has always been. But we saw a sharp decline in yardage efficiency from Gates over the past few years. He's worth a look in redraft leagues -- and worth rostering in TE premium. But don't overrate the name value. The Chargers now boast an attractive trio of red-zone options at WR.

Chargers TE Antonio Gates drew a team-high 9 targets in Sunday's loss to the Panthers. He caught 5 of them for 61 yards. That's not going to win you fantasy matchups, but it's right in line with Gates' usual. The target total was particularly encouraging following 2 straight down weeks. Gates is back into weekly starting consideration going forward. Rookie TE Hunter Henry snagged the 9-yard TD that Gates owners craved, but he caught just 1 other pass among 5 targets. We'll see about their respective snap counts when the playing-time numbers come out Monday.

Chargers TE Antonio Gates (hamstring) is active for today’s game against the Raiders. He was limited in practice all week and is expected to be on some type of snap count today. We’d try to avoid Gates as a TE1.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport hears that Chargers TE Antonio Gates (hamstring) is expected to play against the Raiders today, barring a setback in pregame warmups. "But his snaps may be on the limited side," Rapoport adds. That's not a surprise for a 36-year-old coming off a 2-week absence. Gates figures to be on the field for obvious passing downs and in the red zone, but he's still just a TE2 for Week 5. We prefer teammate Hunter Henry as a fantasy option, although Gates' return makes him a low-end TE1.
