The Jets selected USC QB Sam Darnold with the 3rd pick of the 2018 NFL Draft. Turning 21 in June, Darnold is the youngest QB ever drafted. After redshirting in 2015 and serving as backup for the first 3 games of 2016, Darnold completed a sterling 67.4% of his passes with 29 TDs vs. 8 INTs over the final 10 contests. His numbers took a step back this past year, due in part to the loss of WR JuJu Smith-Schuster and a lingering ankle injury. But a 63.1% completion rate, 8.6 yards per attempt, 26 TDs and 13 INTs ain’t shabby. (Just ask Josh Allen.) Ball-security is the biggest knock against Darnold. On top of his 22 INTs over the past 2 years, he also lost 14 fumbles. Darnold has plenty of arm talent, though. And, while he won’t do a ton of damage on the ground, he’s mobile enough. In New York, he joins a QB room with Josh McCown and Teddy Bridgewater. Consider Darnold the favorite to be under center come Week 1.

Recent Shark Bites

The Raiders have traded G Kelechi Osemele and a 6th-round pick to the Jets for a 5th-rounder. It's a cost-cutting move for Oakland, who is about to hand WR Antonio Brown a big contract. Osemele is coming off a down 2018 that saw him miss 5 games and finish 61st among 77 Gs in Pro Football Focus' grades. But he'll turn just 30 in June and was 1 of PFF's top-graded Gs in each of the previous 4 seasons. He should be a big upgrade for the interior of New York's O-line.

Adam Gase has been hired as the Jets' HC. A hot name on the coaching market just 3 years ago, Gase underwhelmed in Miami, compiling a 23-25 record. The former OC's Dolphins offenses never ranked better than 24th in yards or 17th in points. In his defense, Gase was working with 1 of the weaker rosters in the league. The Jets aren't exactly loaded right now, but they do have a promising, young QB in Sam Darnold.

The Jets have fired HC Todd Bowles. He compiled a 24-40 record in 4 seasons at the helm -- with 10 of those wins coming in his 1st season. The Jets won 5, 5 and 4 games the past 3 years. The team shouldn't have trouble attracting quality HC candidates with QB Sam Darnold and over $100 million in salary cap space.

Jets QB Sam Darnold limped to the locker room in the 1st quarter of Sunday's game in Buffalo. This looks like an aggravation of the right foot injury that cost him the previous 3 games. We'll update Darnold's status when we learn more. QB Josh McCown is in the game for the Jets.

Update: Darnold returned later in the 1st quarter.

Jets QB Sam Darnold (foot) put in a full week of practice and isn't listed on the final injury report. He's fully expected to start Sunday’s game against the Bills. The rookie has disappointed more often than not this season and isn’t a viable Week 14 fantasy play.
