Shark Bites

Jets insider Manish Mehta believes the team's starting QB job is Ryan Fitzpatrick's "to lose."  Geno Smith is out for at least the first couple of weeks with his broken jaw.  If Fitzpatrick starts well, he'll have a chance to hang on to the gig.  Fitz has been a mediocre real-life QB throughout his career, but he did have his best 3-year stretch under current Jets OC Chan Gailey.  With Gailey in Buffalo, Fitz completed 59.4% of his passes with 56 TDs and 49 INTs.  Even that caliber of play might be good enough to keep the starting job.  Fitzpatrick gets a solid Browns defense to open the season but then draws plus matchups against the Colts and Eagles.  He'll be a sneaky DFS play those weeks.  We still wouldn't use a draft pick on Fitz, but he's a potential in-season spot-start option.

Recent Shark Bites

Longtime NFL QB Ryan Fitzpatrick has announced his retirement. A hip injury knocked Fitzpatrick out of the 2021 opener and eventually required surgery. That brief Washington cameo followed stints with the Dolphins, Buccaneers, Jets, Texans, Titans, Bills, Bengals and Rams. Originally a 7th-round pick by St. Louis, Fitzpatrick finishes his career with 34,990 passing yards, 223 TDs, 169 INTs and some excellent press-conference footage.

Washington QB Ryan Fitzpatrick will undergo arthroscopic surgery on his hip, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. That officially ends Fitzpatrick's season. We'll keep an eye on his rehab and see if the 39-year-old wants to continue his football career. He'll hit the free-agent market in March.

Washington QB Ryan Fitzpatrick (hip) is "highly unlikely" to play again this season, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. The 38-year-old is still dealing with swelling and pain in the hip and groin area, per Rapoport. QB Taylor Heinicke will remain Washington's starter for now. We'll see if the team wants to get a look at QB Kyle Allen.

Washington QB Ryan Fitzpatrick (hip) is still "weeks away" from returning and not a lock to return at all this season, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. Fitzpatrick's original timeline had him returning in late October, but it sounds like his recovery has gone slower than expected. Fitzpatrick is still on crutches, per Rapoport, and is expected to get another MRI on that hip this coming week. QB Taylor Heinicke will remain Washington's starter for the foreseeable future -- and potentially the rest of the season.

Washington QB Ryan Fitzpatrick is expected to miss 6-8 weeks with his hip injury, ESPN's Adam Schefter reports. So Fitzpatrick can be dropped from fantasy rosters, outside of deep 2-QB and Superflex leagues. QB Taylor Heinicke will get the 1st crack at replacing Fitzpatrick after holding his own in last year's playoff loss to the Bucs. QBs Kyle Allen and Kyle Shurmur are also on the roster.
