The New Orleans Time-Picayune's Larry Holder expects the Saints to deploy a "3-headed monster" in the backfield this season. He points to the team's 2009 and 2011 backfields as blueprints. In 2009, Mike Bell led the team with 172 carries but caught just 4 balls. Pierre Thomas was next in line with 147 carries and 39 catches. Reggie Bush carried 70 times and hauled in 47 passes. In 2011, Mark Ingram was the lead ball carrier with 122 totes. He caught just 11 passes. Thomas again contributed in both facets, with 110 carries and 50 catches. Ditto with Darren Sproles, who carried 87 times and caught 86 balls. Holder pegs rookie Alvin Kamara for the Bush/Sproles pass-catching role. That'd presumably leave Ingram as Pierre Thomas as Adrian Peterson as Mike Bell/Mark Ingram. The actual touch distribution won't precisely match either of those past backfields. But the takeaway is that all 3 guys could have significant roles. That'd turn it into a fantasy football headache.

Recent Shark Bites

Saints HC Sean Payton said RB Alvin Kamara's usage won't change this season, despite the loss of RB Mark Ingram. “It will be similar to what we’ve been seeing,” Payton said. “We’ve been pleased with the balance we’ve had with him. We think it’s been a good count.” Kamara averaged 22.8 touches per game over the first 4 weeks of last season with Ingram suspended. That sunk to 17.2 touches per game over his final 13 outings, including the playoffs. It sounds like we should expect something around that latter mark in 2019. Of course, Kamara still ranked 5th among RBs in PPR and non-PPR points from Week 5 to 16 with Ingram in the mix. He remains a locked-in top 4 draft pick across fantasy formats. The other fantasy takeaway here is that free-agent addition Latavius Murray should see something similar to the 13.4 touches per game Ingram averaged alongside Kamara last year. That'd be enough to make Murray at least a weekly RB3/flex option.

QB Drew Brees, RB Alvin Kamara and WR Ted Ginn are all healthy scratches for today's meaningless finale against the Panthers. RB Mark Ingram and WR Michael Thomas are active, but don't expect them to play. Dwayne Washington figures to serve as New Orleans' lead back, with Tre'Quan Smith, Keith Kirkwood, Austin Carr and TommyLee Lewis at WR.

Saints RB Alvin Kamara (concussion) practiced all week and isn’t listed on the final injury report. HC Sean Payton confirmed on Friday that his rookie has cleared the concussion protocol and will play against the Jets this weekend. Kamara remains a high-end RB1.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport confirms that Saints RB Alvin Kamara (concussion) is expected to play against the Jets this weekend. The rookie put in his 2nd straight full practice on Thursday. Kamara -- and Mark Ingram -- should be busy with New Orleans whopping 16-point favorites.

Saints RB Alvin Kamara (concussion) put in a full practice on Wednesday. If he hasn't completely cleared the concussion protocol yet, he's close. Kamara is on track to play against the Jets this weekend. He'll, of course, be an elite RB1 for that one.
